I love Boy Scouting, but it was diversity of experiences and perspectives that I learned to value the most and teaching an ethical approach to life, plus learning how to be responsible for my actions and learn how to help and take care of myself, and how to cheerly help others. Technology is great - but when you do not have electricity etc - you need to learn how to take care of yourself and learn to survive.

What an important step and at a opportune time. Perfect timing for the re-build. Scouting is such a wonderful program for our youth. In my 30 years in Scouting I have never met an Eagle Scout that was regretful of their Scouting journey.

Scouting is all about learning life skills -Technology is an evolving and relevant skill - Very useful to leaders for merit badge/award tracking (Troopmaster for eg.) and as a life skill tool 🛠 for scouts. There is a time and place for everything. By all means -lets keep scouts unplugged on field trips as appropriate.

This is an excellent start. As a long term Scouter who loves this program, it is a constant point of frustration that the administrative technology is sorely lacking. I hope they form a national working group for feedback from scouters. We need to alleviate the administrative burden and enable the leaders to spend their time engaged with the Scouts.

Look who embraced technology within Scouting way back in 1970, Steve Jobs. And look how far his Explorer Scout Post has changed society and the world. As a quick hint: owning and carrying a working cellphone (especially an iPhone) in the back country is one of the greatest wilderness survival tools today (for getting out alive, and getting rescued if you are injured.) Checkout the screen shot of HP's employee newsletter showing off the Scouts who were meeting at their HQ, of course his meetings there changed history for ever.

This is really interesting and long over due. Any improvement to the back-end, or paperwork of running a scout troop would probably save lots of time to do more hands-on stuff. As an educator, kids are using apps and websites all the time to track and complete assignments. It doesn't mean that they are glued to their phones during class. The key is to have rules in place when usage is appropriate. I look forward to see how they integrate technology further into scouting!

Looking forward to Roger's bold new vision. Some may worry embracing technology will dilute the core fundamentals of scouting. I do not think so. As with any tool, it needs to be applied thoughtfully. Technology can be a 'force multiplier' on the back-end, bringing efficiencies to administrative functions (e.g. training, planning, recording, etc...). Modernizing Scoutbook would be a good starting point.

Cell phones at scout events, be it in classroom or in the wild is an accepted and a useful tool as is a pocket knife or rope.. No one is debating cell phones or tech. In reading his post-I can see Mr. Oram agrees that technology IS useful however should not be used in place of using the time- trusted methods taught by scouters over 100 years. If that cell battery is depleted, or the power is out -One had better been paying attention to the lessons taught by instructors- rather than fiddling around with their phones during lesson time/s. I like Mr. Hills reference to Steve Jobs' connection with scouting as well as his contribution to society at large . I'm sure Mr. Jobs would agree that there is a time and place". If a lesson requires or is enhanced by tech -Fine. Scouts should keep those phones holstered during lessons ,announcements, where they are not needed and not appropriate (Map and Compass ,fire building etc.). I believe we as Scouters are on the same page with this. Lets continue to support our Scouters and a great Organization which we are passionate about.
