Is this the future of virtual avatars? Check out this paper by researchers from Facebook Reality Labs and University of Southern California, who have developed a method to build high-fidelity relightable head avatars that can be animated to generate novel expressions. Their method, called Relightable Gaussian Codec Avatars, uses 3D Gaussians to capture sub-millimeter details such as hair strands and pores on dynamic face sequences. They also use a novel relightable appearance model based on learnable radiance transfer, which can handle diverse materials of human heads such as the eyes, skin, and hair in a unified manner. The result is a stunning avatar that can be relit in real-time under any lighting condition, with all-frequency reflections and realistic eye reflections. The avatar can also be controlled to change its expression, gaze, and view, creating a lifelike and immersive experience. This is a game-changer for the field of virtual reality, as it opens up new possibilities for social interaction, entertainment, and education using realistic and relatable avatars. Imagine being able to chat with your friends, colleagues, or celebrities in VR, with avatars that look and behave like them. How cool would that be?
