The Declaration of Independence We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn’t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776).

To truly appreciate the British perspective on Independence Day, we must first delve into the historical context. The Fourth of July marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a defining moment in American history. For the British, it signifies the loss of one of their colonies and the birth of a new nation. While this event holds great historical significance for Americans, many Brits also acknowledge and respect it. It serves as a reminder of the shared history between the two nations and the importance of freedom and self-determination. Many Brits view this day as an opportunity to honor the bonds of friendship and collaboration between the United States and the United Kingdom. Taken from the link @ https://lnkd.in/eCxapnmR.

Henry Kissinger, a highly influential and often controversial American diplomat, recently passed away at the age of 100. His legacy, which I studied extensively during my college years, presents a complex blend of both commendable and questionable actions. Known for surviving the Watergate scandal and transforming into a society superstar and wealthy consultant, Kissinger played a pivotal role in shaping American foreign policy. His approach, frequently described as imperialistic, marked a significant period in U.S. history, steering its foreign relations for over 75 years. Kissinger’s tenure was characterized by a distinct neo-colonial attitude, emphasizing American dominance in global affairs. This approach has been critiqued for its long-term detrimental effects, overshadowing his achievements. His tenure saw controversial decisions like the bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War and support for the Pakistani regime during the Bangladesh genocide. These actions have led to criticisms of his methods, with accusations of racism, manipulation of colleagues and nations, and perpetration of international crimes. Kissinger’s profound intelligence and immense power have sparked debates about the concentration of such influence in a single individual’s hands. Reflecting on his legacy, it’s clear that the balance of his contributions versus the negative impacts of his policies remains a topic of intense discussion and analysis. His passing marks the end of an era in U.S. foreign policy, one that has shaped the world in significant ways.
