In 2018, The Wilderness Society developed a public lands curriculum that adds critical historical context for conservation efforts, including institutionalized bias. It is designed to add nuance to “our understanding of how race, culture, gender, and class affect how people engage with public lands” as a step towards bridging divides between the conservation movement and those who have often been excluded. #publiclands https://ow.ly/fb8Y50PLEkZ

In 2019, Heritage Fund launched the Areas of Focus initiative, aimed at supporting regions with significant heritage potential that had historically received less funding. As this five-year commitment comes to an end in 2024, we created three videos for them focused on Newham, Enfield and Brent to celebrate the achievements and partnerships that have emerged. These videos were be showcased at celebratory events organised by the Heritage Fund in February and March 2024, featuring key stakeholders and grantees who have benefited from their support. Project Goals: * Highlighting Achievements: Showcasing the work and partnerships in each Area of Focus. * Community Engagement: Bringing heritage to life through the perspectives of grantees. * Versatile Content: Using a mixture of existing footage and new interviews to create impactful videos. Our strategic approach ensures that each video not only celebrates the success of the Areas of Focus initiative but also serves as a valuable tool for promoting heritage in these regions. #BirdLime #HeritageFund #AreasOfFocus #CaseStudy #VideoProduction #CommunityImpact #StrategicInitiatives

This week we are giving RECOGNITION to the importance of 'Inclusion' for everyone when it comes to accessing green spaces. 🌳Those that live close to woodlands and parks or have a car and are physically able to trek long distances are the only ones able to fully appreciate and enjoy woodland. As a result of urbanisation and reduced transport links, these wonderful spaces have become difficult to reach. 🏞To alleviate fragmentation and disconnection the Devon Woods Team actively encourages the creation of woodland near urban areas, which can provide recreational access; this is achieved by designing woodland to connect to existing Public Rights of Way such as the Tarka Trail and the Devonshire Heartland Way. 🌲It is important that we find ways to ensure that woodland includes suitable infrastructure to suit everyone's needs and that woodland is a safe and user-friendly environment. The England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) encourages the creation of woodland that is created near urban areas through generous incentives as well as contributing towards the installation of small car parks, interpretation boards, benches, ramps, and all ability access bridges. 🏙Projects like Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest aim to create hundreds of hectares of accessible woodland stretching from Plymouth to the North of Dartmoor. Green spaces provide opportunity for social engagements, recharging and connecting with nature. If you are considering planting a new woodland and would like FREE informal advice or just want to find out more, then head to the Devon Woods webpage here https://lnkd.in/eip9v8J9 #DevonWoods #WoodlandCreation #TogetherForOurBiosphere #TogetherForOurPlanet

Navigating Diversity: Exploring Urban and Rural Identities in Modern Society In today's diverse world, the contrast between urban dwellers, or townsmen, and rural men, often celebrated as embodying authenticity, offers a compelling lens through which to understand the richness of human experience. Townsmen, synonymous with city life, thrive amidst the hustle and bustle of urban landscapes. Educated and driven, they embrace the opportunities of modernity, navigating complex social dynamics and technological advancements with finesse. Conversely, rural men find solace in the tranquility of countryside living. Hardworking and deeply connected to the land, they uphold traditions, fostering strong community bonds rooted in shared experiences and a reverence for nature.Yet, the boundaries between these identities blur in our interconnected world. Suburban areas offer a blend of urban and rural lifestyles, while technology facilitates cross-cultural exchanges, bridging geographical gaps. Ultimately, the essence of being a "real man" transcends labels. It lies in qualities of integrity, resilience, and empathy, irrespective of one's environment. Whether in the heart of the city or nestled in the countryside, true strength lies in character and the impact we make on our communities. #Diversity #UrbanVsRural #RealMen #CommunityBuilding

For NAPC Board Member, Sarah Cody, the question of "Why?" is "an on-going, necessary question that always ties back to community building." Read more about Sarah's story, which she shared with us last year, below. Though I grew up in New England, surrounded by history, I really never considered the mechanisms of historic preservation or how it helped shape my apple-orchard filled suburb until I was an adult. I didn’t truly discover my “why” until recently, even though I’ve worked professionally in historic preservation for over 15 years. When I enrolled in a Landscape Architecture program in college, and I sat listening to lectures on plant selection, garden design, and stormwater management, I was unsure what I was doing there. Then we had a guest lecturer - the Historic Sites Restoration Coordinator with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. She talked about the restoration of a statue in downtown Syracuse and suddenly everything clicked into place for me. That tangible connection to the past intrigued me. This newfound interest along with the values my mentor George W. Curry instilled in me - the importance of using your work to be of service to your community - led me to public service. Having just completed a decade as a public servant, I can honestly say I truly discovered my “why” just within the last few years. I recognize that am incredibly privileged, and I strongly believe that it is my duty as a public servant to use my education and professional position to utilize the power of our historic and cultural places to help create more resilient and equitable communities for the residents of Miami-Dade County. Continuing to ask myself “why” is something I find incredibly important to do throughout my work – why are we doing the work we are doing, who is it for, and who does it benefit? For me, historic preservation is less about history and more about community building. So for me, “why” is an on-going, necessary question that always ties back to community building. Never underestimate the power of public space. ‘They are places of social interaction and community building. They are places where people learn to live with difference. They offer a stage for political and social protest and can encourage democracy and equality. They are crucial to the flourishing of people and their greater societies.’ #publicspace #placesforpeople #landscapearchitecture #urbandesign #placemaking #publicrealm https://lnkd.in/euE97Ug2
