Was asked about revenue diversification and balancing profit and audience needs at this year’s BroadcastAsia at ATxSG. Rather than sharing a best practice or claiming to have cracked the code, I acknowledged that this is not a straightforward matter. Every organisation is at a different stage of development and maturity, with different purposes, contexts, strategic imperatives, options, and choices to be made. Diversification is neither a given nor does it always come naturally. For many organisations, the Innovator’s Dilemma is very real. Mothership’s purpose is to deliver news, and we consider news to be a public good. Any profit motive ultimately has to serve this very purpose. Despite the many headwinds facing the media industry globally, we continue to believe a virtuous cycle is possible - one where putting our audiences first can be profitable, and where profits in turn drive continual reinvention and the provision of yet greater utility and value.

Although not an EU State, Switzerland is still a member of the Schengen Area in Europe. When the Swiss National Broadcasters asked us for flexibility in enabling a border-crossing style of collaboration between different media divisions of the SRG, this concept came to mind. #ListeningInAction. In organizations like theirs, TV, RADIO, ONLINE & SOCIAL production teams often collaborate to build complete content packages for various distribution channels. When those individual areas use dedicated, best-of-breed tools, licensing can get complicated. Using the Schengen metaphor, which leaves country borders open unless, or until, something out of the ordinary occurs, there is now a mutual commitment to open borders and fair use of DAVID software within the SRG SSR. This model supports SRG SSR’s need for collaborative, dynamic audio production capabilities and promotes open communication to adjust and meet exceptional challenges together. When resources can be shared easily within the organization, opportunities to explore new ideas and new workflows increase. With more flexible, trust-based license management, collaborative content production can flourish, and administrative overhead is minimized.
