I’ve been a part of subscription box businesses that have scaled past $100mm in revenue and others that have gone bankrupt within the first 6 months. If I could go back and talk to the businesses that were struggling, here’s what I would tell them to do: 1. Track LTV by customer segment (one-time vs. subscriptions) You will usually lose money on a LTV: CAC basis on customers who don’t subscribe. Track your customer mix closely and understand what LTV is on subscribers vs. ad-hoc customers. Be careful. 2. Optimize subscription enrollment rate The percentage of checkouts that subscribe (vs. one-time purchase) is called your subscription “enrollment rate”. Optimize the UX of your cart with things like defaulting to subscription, placing the subscription offer above the one-time checkout price, and using strikethroughs on the one-time price. These changes can easily double enrollment rates. 3. Aggressively manage churn rates You need to design incentives to reward loyalty. There are higher-performing options than “subscribe and save 20%". The best ways to do this are to increase discounts the longer someone subscribes, give them a bigger discount to prepay multiple orders or give discounts for bundling.
