Copywriter? Social Media Manager? Social Media Copy Manager? Here was our challenge: Recently we were working on a scope of work for a new client. Their budget was about $40K/month for a social media team. When we put the team together, we had 12 people on it, which is way more than $40K/month. Unless we only take up small pieces of everyone’s time. But thats not good either because the more focused someone can be on an account, the better they know the audience and the company, and the better they will be at their job. So, we merged roles. And one of these roles we decided to merge was a social media manager and copywriter. Now we have a problem. We favored the social media manager piece, but we need them to be a great writer. Because really, we need both. But since most brands don't have the budget to spend millions of dollars on staffing a social media team (another post altogether), what do we favor and how should we consider titles? Is everyone hybrid with a variety of skills but less deep specialization? What does that mean for career tracks? I don’t have the solution. But it's a question that, as an industry, we need to solve. I'm curious to hear how other people think about this and have solved for it both on the agency side and in-house teams that are building this out? Not only do we need to solve this, we can and we will. So tell me what you think! Or maybe you have already solved it?
