#materials #research Dear DMR Colleagues, The NSF Solicitation 22-604 “Launching Early-Career Academic Pathways in the Mathematical and Physical Science” has an emphasis on support to launch the careers of pre-tenure faculty in Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) fields at institutions that do not traditionally receive significant amounts of NSF-MPS funding, such as some minority-serving institutions (MSIs), predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs), and Carnegie Research 2 (R2) universities. LEAPS-MPS has the additional goal of achieving excellence through diversity and aims to broaden participation to include members from groups historically excluded and currently underrepresented in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences. These grants are intended to support MPS principal investigators, particularly at the aforementioned institutions, for whom LEAPS funding would enable the PI to submit a subsequent successful proposal to a traditional, already-existing NSF funding opportunity, such as individual investigator programs, CAREER competitions, etc. More information about this Program can be found in the Solicitation and FAQs linked to this website Launching Early-Career Academic Pathways in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences | NSF - National Science Foundation The deadline for submission of proposals to this Solicitation is January 25, 2024. For potential applicants who have questions about this funding opportunity, there will be office hours on January 4, 2024, 4-5 pm. This is the link to registration to attend one of these webinars: https://lnkd.in/exVRrr6U Questions can also be sent any time to Program Directors who serve as Points of Contact for this Solicitation by email (preferred) or phone. They currently are: Catalina Achim, cachim@nsf.gov, (703) 292-2048, MPS/OAD James Higdon, jhigdon@nsf.gov, (703) 292-2389, MPS/AST Anne-Marie Schmoltner, aschmolt@nsf.gov, (703) 292-4716, MPS/CHE Souleymane O. There are multiple reasons for joining the Beyond Rankings: How far can Academic Excellence Initiatives go? live discussion with Prof Maria Yudkevich and Dr Alexandra Borissova Saleh on Friday 5 April 2024 at 10 a.m. CET. The first is that it will be a guaranteed 1+ hour of intellectual pleasure with two amazing experts guiding a lively discussion about academic excellence. The second reason is the amazing #BeyondRankings community made up of great HE professionals and experts from all over the world. Conceived originally by Dr Alexandra Borissova Saleh, #BeyondRankings is growing much faster than we expected. The first webinar was attended by experts from Switzerland to Uzbekistan and from Qatar to Brazil. Putting complex concepts in objective and comprehensible terms and creating inspiring projects that bring together hundreds and thousands of people have long been among Alexandra’s talents. The third reason is our resident expert on this topic. Prof Maria Yudkevich has spent years studying academic excellence initiatives (and working within them) as well as the various effects of increasing competition in higher education. Her recent book Academic Star Wars: Excellence initiatives in global perspective (co-edited with Philip G. Altbach and Jamil Salmi (2023)) is just one of her numerous brilliant works in this area. Consider also The Global Academic Rankings Game: Changing institutional policy, practice, and academic life (co-edited with Philip Altbach and Laura E. Rumbley (2016)). These and numerous other academic works, vast research, and administrative university experience are all you need to understand that she is probably one of the best expert to talk to if you are interested in the issue of academic excellence. The fourth reason is more personal. Being a geographer by profession with a focus on socio-economic and regional geography, over the last few years I have been involved in developing academic excellence initiatives in numerous countries. Government bodies (as well as universities) very often have a narrow perception of academic excellence initiatives as programmes meant to push universities up in the rankings, while reality their results present a completely different picture. At the same time, from the point of view of economic geography, it is very difficult to find the right balance between prioritising resources for development, creating points of growth, and maintaining the integrity of the national higher education sector. Looking forward to a very interesting and thought-provoking discussion. Organizer: E-Quadrat Science & Education Register: https://lnkd.in/ehK8t6n3
