Aren't All Over paintings an extension of Degas' use of photography? A photograph is a slice of a larger scene. All Over paintings are slices of larger scenes, like a Vija Celmins. In All Over painting is the awareness of its extending off the canvas, the defined stage. It seems monotheistic, a single point of focus. It is interesting that we loathe to give up the heroic genius as the progenetor of an idea. I wonder if that has to do with our prizing individuality, manifest destiny of a sort, in a way that isn't held in communist countries. I met with museum people at the Centro Wilfredo Lam in Havana and they didn't have any interest in my American solo exhibition. It didn't relate to their sense of community and comeradship. Old fairy tales die hard.
