🚀 The Hunt for the Perfect Candidate! 🎉 As we celebrate Kubernetes' 10th birthday, it's a perfect time to reflect on some of the quirks in our industry. Recently, I shared a meme about job postings requiring 15 years of Kubernetes experience, and it resonated with so many of you, garnering over 300K views! Today, discuss the mythical "Perfect Candidate" for DevOps roles. You know, the one who’s not only a DevOps expert but also a master of security, development, system admin, graphics, and perhaps even a barista on the side. 😆 Let's laugh and acknowledge that while we strive for versatility, sometimes job postings can get a bit... ambitious. When recruiters look for a DevOps engineer who can do it all: - Expert in security 🔒 - Skilled developer 💻 - System admin wizard 🖥️ - Graphics designer 🎨 - Oh, and DevOps too! 🔄

🚀 Helping Start-Ups Build Better Teams, Dictate Larger Funding Rounds & Generate More Revenue 🚀 Matt@scouut.com.au
'Platform Engineer' seems to be the hottest job title of 2024 so far. "What's that?" you might be asking - well, nobody can really agree, but every growing start-up and scale-up seems to be hiring for one nonetheless. And if it's something that you're planning to go to market for, here's a handful of things to be aware of before you do. 1 - This, for the most part, is a new job title. Its unlikely you'll find many (if any) candidates with extensive experience under the title 'Platform Engineer' 2 - What you will find are two distinct backgrounds: Either a DevOps/Cloud/Infra background, or a Backend Software Engineering background. 3 - Expect candidates with a DevOps/Infra/Cloud background to be earning more money than those from Backend Engineering backgrounds. 4 - BOTH will earn more than the typical Software Engineers in your team. A Platform Engineering position pays about 10-20% more. (Seniors are $200K+) 5 - From a supply / demand perspective, the Platform Engineering market is one of the most competitive and difficult to hire in that we have EVER seen. 6 - Senior Platform Engineers who are exceptionally strong in both Backend Engineering & DevOps/Infra/Cloud are like gold dust and earn over $230K+. 7 - Quite a few companies are opting to train a Backend or DevOps Engineer instead of hiring an existing Platform Engineer because it's way cheaper.

John asks why Executives and Managers are expected to understand technologies. My software development teams like that I have done their jobs: business analysis, UI design, databases, programming, etc. They know I know their challenges, and I will provide a miracle if they get lost. My resume is targeted as Software Developer because recruiters do not handle management roles. I solve problems. I understand people, business, technologies (plus animals, music, and everything else.) I make every project successful. "Every project" does not involve IT. I handled business strategy, manufacturing efficiency, risk assessment, and other non-IT projects. Yesterday, a friend suggested I help a huge company which realized MBA-type people will never reverse their downfall. I would need experts in many topics which I have not used lately. I might need to move to Germany. I do not know how to present myself for consideration. Why does everyone want me to help with manufacturing? Singapore, Audubon (local town), Germany... Should I stop seeking software work and focus on miraculous management of huge projects? 20231110
Why does a Senior Director of Software Engineering need to know Kubernetes? The role: ✅ Lead and scale a multi-team software engineering capability across multiple, development areas and products. ✅ Contribute to strategic initiatives for the engineering organisation. ✅ Develop and maintain strong working relationships with product management and other relevant functions. ✅ Build highly motivated teams, while providing strong leadership, mentorship and career development. ✅ Establish and drive a sense of community within the engineering teams. The skillset: ❌ Java, Go or Node.js. ❌ SQL & NoSQL Databases. ❌ Networking IP/TCP/UDP/HTTP. ❌ Container management with Kubernetes. ❌ Hands-on experience with technologies such as AWS. No wonder so many senior managers don’t have the leadership or strategic skills to do a good job. This is a role that is currently being advertised, minor details changed to protect the guilty.
