The future sports fan is todays gamer. The challenge we all have in sports is how do we reach and engage younger audiences and create lifelong fans of our sports. This may not mean that they are an active participant but a fan of the sport who knows the athletes and teams. Electronic Arts (EA) Sports and FIFA had a great partnership that brought football into every home. Wimbledon and Roblox are exploring the same with WimbleWorld. The potential International Olympic Committee – IOC Esports Games will showcase some of the best games and virtual sports to a younger audience. Allowing sports to reach demographics that they might not be able to reach with their current models. An exciting future for sport is around the corner. #esports #olympics --- Some stats According to Uswitch, 90% of 16 to 24 year olds played video games of some form. According to YouGov, less than a third of 18 to 24-year-old sports fans watched live matches on television, compared with three quarters of sports fans over 55.

Great to see the International Olympic Committee – IOC taking all the right steps in the right direction for esports inclusion into the Olympics in the future. I want to be clear on my thoughts here. Esports, in its current form, doesn’t need the Olympics… I’d argue that the wording in the official IOC statement shows they understand that it may actually be the other way around. Furthermore, like everything when gaining mainstream acceptance, things change and evolve. I was highly dubious of the Olympic version of Esports before attending the Olympic Esports Series in Singapore last year with Kristen Cummins. What became crystal clear for me was that a blend of some esport titles and virtual sports work perfectly well in this arena. Major teams and major esports tournament will always exist, thank God and include traditional and more authentic titles that don’t fit the Olympic remit, but in my opinion, this IOC announcement is a fantastic result for grassroots esports and mainstream acceptance….
