The next class of Forty Under 40 will be the 25th group to be recognized. Ahead of nominations opening in December, we asked 2006 Alum and 2012 Alum of the Year Jay Byers his recommendations for those who aspire to be a Forty Under 40. "The advice I always give young professionals who want to become influential community leaders is to get engaged with organizations and causes that align with their personal interests and that they are passionate about," he said. "Also, it is important to focus on quality engagement, and not quantity of involvement. "In other words, start by focusing on deep, meaningful engagement with one or two community organizations instead of surface-level involvement with a large number of organizations just to pad your resume. If you step up as a leader and are willing to do the work and make things happen, you will be recognized by other community leaders and will be highly sought after as a future leader." When we have integrity, we gain the trust of our leaders, our colleagues and our team. We're dependable, and, when we hold ourselves accountable for our actions, we become role models for others to follow. All of this, in turn, directly impacts our success in life. Your actions must be consistent with your words. People's true intentions show through actions. It is easy to make promises or say things that sound good, but it is much more challenging to follow through on those promises and demonstrate a commitment to their integrity and yours.

The first 90 days of this year has quickly gone past us. Over the years, I have observed the importance of the first 90 days for significant impact by new individuals in teams I lead or have been a part of. Individuals who join as a new team member far exceed expectations in the first 90 days of their start when they do three things. These three characteristics often endear them to others: ➡ They never say, “it is not my responsibility.” They jump in and take on any job that needs to get done. They can act as the CEO of the team or the janitor of the team and do not let their ego come in the way of work that needs to be completed. ➡ They help the team succeed. They are always there to help someone who is in need or jump into help a teammate who requires extra help. They never grumble and they take on appropriate extra work so that everyone wins. ➡ They quickly move mountains by getting stuff done. They are so focused and deliver on outcomes that often you wonder where they came from and how can they accomplish so much in such a short time. They are effective and productive in the work they do. This year has been no different for me in observing these characteristics in new members of the teams I am part of. Attached is a clip from former U.S. President Barack Obama who explains why getting stuff done is the most important career advice one can get. I thought you would enjoy it. Have you been that player when you started a new role or observed other characteristics? #leadership #careerdevelopment #personalgrowth
