Throwback Thursday: Celebrating a Dialysis Milestone 🗓️ 1960s: The Birth of the AV Fistula In the 1960s, Drs. Cimino and Brescia introduced the arteriovenous (AV) fistula, a groundbreaking advancement in dialysis treatment. This innovative procedure connected an artery and a vein, creating a durable access point for hemodialysis. The AV fistula significantly improved the quality of life and treatment outcomes for dialysis patients and remains a cornerstone of dialysis care today. 💡 Fun Fact: The AV fistula is still considered the gold standard for vascular access in hemodialysis due to its long-term reliability and lower complication rates. #ThrowbackThursday #DialysisHistory #HealthcareInnovation #DialysisTechnicianTraining #DialysisEducation

Video-telling time🎧: Meet Mr. Baron who came to us from Vanderbilt, Nashville. He is home dialysis patient on peritoneal dialysis (PD). It is common for dialysis patients to lose their residual urine volume over time . He was in similar situation not making any urine and was very weak, by changing his meds he is so much better now and has good urine output which is so important for these patients- not only to get rid of extra fluid, but also helps with their prescription, blood pressure, electrolytes and better clearance of toxin. He was previously utilizing dialysis bags of maximal strength(4.25% or red bags) later he was able to to transition to minimal strength bags( 1.5%/ yellow bags)which is better for PD patients. Take home message for dialysis patients- even if their urine output has markedly gone down- do not get discouraged, changing in diuretics can improve things !! Residual renal function(able to urinate to eliminate toxin naturally out) is very important in our dialysis patients!! #todaypost #kidneyhealth #bloodpressure #toxinfree #dialysis #dailylife #doctorconsultation #change #healthylifestyletips #flexible #advocacy #storytelling #factsmatter #livelifetothefullest #timemanagement #betterpatientcare #patienttestimonial #wellnessjourney #safer #goodhealthandwellbeing #improvement #linkedinfamily #linkedinlearning #connections #residual renal function ( RRF)

Use of Abbott's #CardioMEMS HF System has been shown many times to reduce heart failure hospitalizations in NYHA Class II and III heart failure patients, and disrupt the progression of #HeartFailure. But results from a recent feasability study called INTELLECT 2-HF suggests that #HeartMate LVAD patients managed hemodynamically with the CardioMEMS HF System have improved outcomes. • A significant reduction in PAD at 6 months was observed and associated with improvements in 6MWD in patients who saw a reduction in PA pressure • Reducing PA pressure in LVAD patients is associated with an increase in 6MWD and reduction in HFH • Maintaining a PAD < 20 mmHg was associated with lower HFH and emergency room visits Here we have Dr. Tamer Amer out of San Antonio Methodist Heart Failure & Transplant Clinic utilizing the CardioMEMS HF system to improve the management and outcomes of LVAD patients #proudtobeabbott

Another success story is added to our portfolio but this one is super special since it includes collaboration between NYU doctors and us. The patient came to our clinic with a history of 1st toe amputation and placement of growth factors in the stump of the left lower limb, which was infected and was not progressing favorably. At the time of the evaluation, we performed an ankle-brachial index reported at 0.7, compatible with Rutherford IV peripheral arterial disease. We completed a vascular panel and referred to the vascular surgeon who performed a first angioplasty where unfortunately it could not be completely revascularized, requiring a second intervention. Given that the patient had good medical insurance in the United States, he decided to seek follow-up in New York where the doctors performed two more angioplasties and it was in the third angioplasty where revascularization was possible in a greater proportion. A trans metatarsal amputation was completed and he was given fixed outpatient care. After his recovery, the patient returned to the country where he brought us donations of disposable materials and topical creams for our patients with the fewest resources, demonstrating the solidarity that characterizes my patients. I am very happy with his evolution and outcome. They never stopped sending me photos of their evolution and communicating to me the progress and steps that were being taken there. But above all I am happy to see that he is productive, continues walking, and helps us promote knowledge about diabetic foot and its prevention. In the future it would be much better if doctors from different countries could have more concentrated networking and that patients who decide, for some reason, to travel to another country, can continue to be cared for by health personnel who communicate with each other, efficiently, in order to guarantee the best evolution of the patient. #solidarity #success #woundclinic #heal #prevent #educate

ECMO: From last resort therapy to a lifesaving standard in 2024? ECMO is a viable option to prevent worsening of lung injury and multiorgan failure due to perfusion issues, but the window for ECMO use is of paramount importance. For this, it is important for all physicians and all specialities to understand how ECMO can safeguard their patients, from periods of life threatening circulatory or gas exchange failure, to buy time and offer safety to perform tricky procedures, operations or treatments which would be too risky without ECMO support. #ecmo | #lunginjury | #physicians | #patients | #healthnews Read more:
