Across the board, Habitat's programs have exceeded goals and set new records this year. 💯💯💯 In 2023, our ReClaim program diverted 226,317 pounds of material from the landfill and reclaimed an estimated $150,878 worth of products. What's the impact of ReClaim? Instead of contributing to our waste stream, those materials were sold at affordable prices at the Habitat ReStore La Crosse. Instead of needing to purchase expensive, new products, our shoppers could save money on home improvement projects by choosing secondhand material. And best of all, the money we earn on ReClaim items directly supports our mission to provide and preserve affordable housing. It's a win-win-win. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gakD6EbG.

Eleven seconds! That is how fast one man can collect your trash each week. This is a perfect example of significant and beneficial change through process improvement. As a child I recall watching three to four men per garbage truck collect our trash twice a week. Not only that, we had three different service providers come through the neighborhood. That equates to approximately 18 men and six trucks that frequent my street each week. Today there is one man, one truck each week that collects for the entire community. Imagine all the improvements that occured in this simple process of collecting trash over the past 20 years as well as the benefits.

Last week, Dallas Herbert, member of many organizations including Trash Academy had a letter to the editor published in the Inquirer (Monday the 29th). It speaks to the repitition and frustration of repetitive cleaning. Our campaign CleanphillyNOW calls for prevention measures as an essential part of ending dumping. We are calling for the Sanitation Convenience Centers to be open to small haulers (for an affordable fee) so they have legal alternative to dumping in vacant lots in neighborhoods across Philly. Keep it clean (the letter) Our group has worked to stop dumping in our neighborhood, at a hot spot known as Snake Road, for years. We mobilized neighbors, put pressure on city departments and officials to address the problem, built alliances, and engaged in discussions to learn about lasting solutions. Largely because of our efforts, the area is cleaner, with more frequent city pickups. We commend Mayor Cherelle L. Parker for committing to ending trash dumping, but we were disappointed by her approach that pledges to enforce existing laws and promises that city agencies will do better. Our experience shows us that this is not enough. City revenue is limited and needs to be spent on real, sustainable fixes. Existing disposal services need expansion. As much of the trash on Snake Road is from housing cleanouts, people need easier access to city dumping sites at an affordable cost. Additionally, two cameras were installed on Snake Road at a considerable cost and had little impact. The punitive structures that we have now are not working. Clean Philadelphia Now, developed by the Trash Academy, is a comprehensive platform. It recognizes that this problem is concentrated in low-income communities of color, and solutions come only when these communities are engaged. Dallas Herbert, 215 People’s Alliance, Northeast chapter, Philadelphia

🌍 Urgent Call to Action: Clean Our Streets🗑️ The state of our streets has become a pressing concern. The accumulation of trash not only poses serious health risks but also undermines the integrity and appearance of our communities. This issue demands immediate and concerted action from our government. It is imperative that our nation implements comprehensive waste management policies, allocate sufficient funding for regular street cleaning, and launch robust public awareness campaigns. These steps are crucial to ensuring that our public spaces are clean, safe, and welcoming. However, the responsibility does not rest solely on the shoulders of the government. Businesses, community organizations, and individuals must also step up. By fostering a culture of collective responsibility, we can achieve lasting change and uphold the dignity of our shared environments. Action is needed now. Together, we can transform our streets and safeguard our communities for future generations. #CleanStreets #PublicHealth #GovernmentAction #CommunityResponsibility #EnvironmentalStewardship ---

International repair day - some reflections #righttorepair As right to repair policy and legislative changes gather momentum around the world, Australia needs to reflect deeply on the opportunity cost of inaction against the Productivity Commision recommendations which lie gathering dust on a forgotten bookshelf. Consumers can and should consume responsibly (buy quality and make it last). However manufacturers design, build, market and support (or not) after-market repair. We need to start holding these businesses responsible and accountable for their business practices. Enter policy and legislative change (government action required). At the grass roots level, momentum for place based citizen-centric community repair initiatives continue to grow apace. These are independent, largely volunteer led and run groups struggling with zero recognition and funding support. Benefits to community - addresses social isolation and loneliness, broadens informal volunteering across age groups and skill sets, shares skills and imparts knowledge and self-confidence to give repair a go! Regenerative community building at its best. Oh and its good for your budget, the environment and the planet. Come on Aussie, come on, come on… Let’s get going.
