Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Databricks produced a report together called "The great acceleration: CIO perspectives on generative AI". The report highlights the seismic shift brought about by consumer-facing generative AI tools, emphasizing their potential to democratize AI across enterprises. The report predicts a monumental impact on economies, with McKinsey estimating a $2.6 to $4.4 trillion annual addition to the global economy due to generative AI. If you're not using AI, then you're missing out. On the flip side, a quote by the CIO of Shell, Owen O'Connell stood out about AI use: “We can’t allow things like Shell’s corporate strategy to be flowing through ChatGPT...someone else is going to derive a lot of value out of my data.” AI is powerful, but if you're not careful, it's another way for companies to monetize your hard won proprietary information and traffic it to to fuel your competitors (or nefarious actors). OpenAI and Google are tech companies that specialize in tech. Google's mission is to "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." On the flip side, there are a ton of other AI proposal writers, CRMs, etc. that also just want your data so they can use it to make their tool better for free and don't respect your privacy. I recommend you read the report for yourself - you're going to get more golden nuggets than the high level insights I'm putting here, so go to the link and check it out. When you're done, think about the companies that aren't clear about what they do with your data. It should be easy. Hathr can tell you exactly where your data is, who has access to it, and what we'll do with it (it's easy: we store your data securely, never make copies and never reuse it). Some highlights from the article: - Unlocking Hidden Data Value: The capacity of generative AI to process and leverage unstructured data is unlocking new avenues for innovation and efficiency, previously hindered by the inaccessibility of vast data stores. - Infrastructure Evolution: The emergence of data lakehouses represents a shift towards infrastructures that are both flexible and efficient, capable of supporting the data needs of generative AI applications. - Workforce Transformation: The report dispels fears of widespread job displacement, instead highlighting the shift towards higher-value tasks and the role of AI as an enhancer of human capability rather than a replacement. - Governance and Security: It underscores the imperative for robust governance and security to navigate the complex landscape of generative AI, ensuring the protection of sensitive data and intellectual property. https://lnkd.in/edXXV6cj

Inspiring and strategic leader in the technology and data center infrastructure domains, driven by a passion for achieving long-term, profitable growth.
As the entire technology and financial community eagerly awaits Nvidia’s earnings call tomorrow, I continue to investigate the challenges faced by enterprise customers in leveraging Generative AI. This article highlights a few additional hurdles beyond the well-known data security, availability, and quality issues: deployment complexity and, likely as a consequence of the aforementioned factors, a lack of return on investment (ROI). Consider these two abstracts from this CIO article: - Deploying the right technology stack is incredibly complex: Even a simple generative AI solution requires assembling approximately 20 to 30 elements! - According to McKinsey’s global AI survey, only 15% of companies are experiencing earnings improvements from generative AI initiatives. These are just two reasons why the current perceived gold rush and its associated irrational exuberance may come to an end sooner rather than later. #GenAI, #ROI, #DownToEarth
