Sex and gender are often conflated or equated in everyday conversations, and most American adults believe a person’s gender is determined by sex assigned at birth. But a new study of nearly 5,000 9- and 10-year-olds found that sex and gender map onto largely distinct parts of the brain. The research gives a first insight into how sex and gender may have “measurable and unique influences” on the brain, study authors said, just as other experiences have been shown to shape the brain.

Interesting. I remember a childhood friend of mine who it turned out was, “gay”. I didn’t see it, he was just a good friend. Looking back, I had very few other friends at that time evidently because of my friendship with this individual. In retrospect he was discriminated against & through my association so was I. I grew up in a small town. Fast forward about 20-years & my youngest son had exactly the same experience with a fellow he had known since kindergarten (15+ years). In that instance one of his primary antagonists was his wrestling coach. Again we lived in a small town. My conclusion is societies like conformity, there is limited tolerance for the “odd” individual. That is unfortunate because allot can’t be gained from listening to people who see the world slightly differently. The next generation’s thought processes appear to be changing if this study is accurate. Time will tell but I don’t view this as a bad thing, although I am sure some will disagree with me. People are people & should be allowed to peacefully live their lives as they see fit. Who are we to judge.

Sex and gender are “conflated” in everyday conversation because they mean and are the same thing. This is not “conflation” but common use and accuracy. Maintaining a division in ordinary speech feels awkward because it’s inaccurate and contrary to common use. This is the position that now has the most traction among experts in most enlightened communities (professional and otherwise). Presenting this concept as though there is a distinction that is contrary to common speech is misleading.
