We all take for granted that things like walking, raising your arms up over your head, and even turning your head are just common activities we all can do BUT they are essential functions that gradually turn into pre existing impairments typically caused by injury or just the normal aging process. WorkSTEPS database has over 100 measures on millions of new hire candidates and comprises the largest baseline human database in the world. Just one interesting phenomena from the data shows that most men over 50 have lost over 1/3 of their shoulder strength lifting overhead. Data like this tells us you can’t just go to a DOT recertification physical, pass it, and think your shoulder is ok to go pick up a 60 lb tarp and throw it up on the flat bed of an 18 wheeler. That is why WorkSTEPS measures the motion, documents stability, grades arthritic grinding of the joints, does provocative testing to determine rotator cuff function and does progressive lifting to find out what the candidate can safely do to then match their function to their essential job tasks. Baseline impairment measures protect employers from liability for pre-existing conditions (even in California) and make recovery much faster to get right back where you were versus trying to make your aging injury completely brand new. WorkSTEPS protects you from hiring your next pre-exiting claim and gives concrete evidence on a post injury test to verify exactly how the joint (no matter what part of the body) is now different than the baseline. Most of the time this negates a compensable claim and allows for OSHA triage, Fit For Work early onsite intervention, or some other legal strategy to accommodate the employee temporarily while they quickly transition back into full duty. Stay proactive with experienced experts here to help you!! Larry Feeler,PT , NRCME Founder, WorkSTEPS
