Senior Operations Leader | Specializing in Developing People to Improve Processes and Achieve Operational Excellence Across Multiple Sectors | I Will Find A Way Or Make One
In my job search journey, I've come across a recurring issue that baffles me - job postings that scream "ENTRY LEVEL" in all caps but then list Bachelor's or Master's degree and 5-7 years of industry experience as requirements. It seems like a case of companies just copy-pasting job descriptions without considering the actual role. It's becoming evident that these companies are mere replicas of something else. It's no surprise they struggle to attract quality team members when they seek clones of past employees. If they don't invest effort in crafting accurate job postings, it raises questions about their commitment to building strong teams. #jobsearch #recruitment #jobpostings #teambuilding

Why 'Apply Anyway' is a Lie 99% of Hiring Managers Tell The Harsh Truth About "Apply Anyway" Job Postings Ever see a job description that says something like "If you don't meet 100% of the requirements, apply anyway! We believe in hiring people, not just skills." And then it proceeds to list about 47 different skills and qualifications? Thanks to a thoughtful perspective from one of my mentees, I now better understand the unfortunate disconnect behind such mixed messages. The reality? These "apply anyway" caveats often have little to do with truly opening the aperture for passionate candidates. Instead, they can stem from misaligned incentives between recruiters and hiring managers. Recruiters are frequently measured by volume-based metrics like time-to-fill reqs and applicant funnel sizes. A highly specific skill list makes their jobs harder. So even if it contradicts the hiring team's criteria, they're inclined to promote an "apply anyway" approach that boosts candidate quantities. Meanwhile, hiring managers tend to care more about precisely vetting quality fits and identifying top performers. But the people melding their needs into job posts don't necessarily share those priorities. The end result? Confusing, muddled job descriptions that talk out of both sides of their mouth. The underlying motivations create a disconnect between claiming "We want great people!" and clearly defining what "great" actually means for a particular role. Does this common scenario resonate with your experiences in the job market? I'd love to hear your takes. To employers, I'll say this: Make sure your job posting aligns with what you truly want. Don't hide behind meaningless platitudes or tricks to cast an indiscriminately wide net. Clearly lay out your priorities and what "applying anyway" really means in practice. Clear transparency earns credibility. To candidates, don't take "apply anyway" language at face value if it clashes with listed criteria. Seek clarification on their actual openness to gaps in those listed skills/qualifications. You deserve honesty about role fit. Mixed recruiting messages rarely serve anyone well in the long run. They lead to frustration on both sides of the hiring process. I'm grateful to my mentee for surfacing this dynamic - it's a good reminder to look beyond just wording and consider root incentives driving certain behaviors. If we want sane, efficient hiring, all parties have to get aligned on true priorities and goals. Leave the open-ended platitudes behind and embrace clear mutual understanding instead. What are your thoughts on this candid take? I'm always aiming to peel back the layers and unearth what's really going on in this wild world of hiring. Let's discuss ways to improve!
