🚨PoV: The strength & calm required to work in Web3, when all around is in chaos (Sound: ON)… 😱 The German government are dumping Bitcoin! 😱 Polkadot are running out of treasury! 😱 The SEC is suing everyone! 😱 Starbucks is stopping its NFT pilot! 😱 Scammers are hacking wallets! Etc. etc. etc… 📊 Unfortunately, the Web3 generation has become too used to instant gratification through access to founders on discord, highly volatile markets, and the speed of innovation in the digital asset area. 🤦🏽♂️If devs didn’t ’do something’ today to benefit the community’s outlook, then all is doomed!… However. 🎁 Digital transformation of industries and markets takes time… 👾 For example, video games, an important and much cited area for Web3 innovation, typically take 1.5 - 2 years to build. So any ‘tokenised’ innovation based on today’s thinking probably won’t be in the hands of users until 2026! 😅 Remember not to sweat the noise outside. Some stocks drop as much as 20% in one day, and the industry doesn’t even blink. It doesn’t mean ‘it’s all over’ and it doesn’t mean ‘you’ve done your job’ either. 🥔 FWIW if you’re building, have a clear growth plan, trust in your differentiation, and make small wins every day. It's a principle that holds especially true in today's "bear" crypto landscape. We're seeing a growth in services, groundbreaking tech, and evolving legislation—all indicating the maturation of the crypto space. But let's not kid ourselves; the risks have heightened too. 🌐 It's a tough market, no doubt. But tough doesn't mean impossible. There are golden opportunities for those willing to embrace an effective risk management strategy (and patience, a lot of patience). When I first joined Web3, it seemed like all my financial problems could vanish overnight. The promises of decentralization and democratization sounded like the ultimate financial freedom. But reality soon set in. The truth? Web3 is not a magic wand. It's a tool; its impact depends on how we use it. Web3 offers alternatives to traditional finance but doesn't replace the discipline needed for financial success. Here are some hard facts: - The Web3 space is highly volatile. Some have made fortunes, but many have lost everything. Success requires research, timing, and luck. - For every genuine project, many are just hype. Some influencers promote questionable projects for quick gains, leaving many disillusioned. Not every project deserves your trust. - Web3 isn't replacing traditional finance. Institutions like BlackRock are involved because they see blockchain as an evolution, not a savior. Web3 complements, not overthrows, existing systems. - Decentralization ≠ Security. Hacks and scams are everyday occurrences. Without knowledge, you’re vulnerable. Remember, the Mt. Gox hack victims are only now getting compensation after decades of the infamous hack. Instead of seeing Web3 as a Savior, see it as an opportunity—a landscape rich with potential and challenges. Educate yourself, manage risks, and diversify your portfolio. Web3 is all about enhancing traditional systems, not abandoning them. It's for those ready to embrace change, whose value unfolds over time. Morgan Lewis' talk at the last MBA got me riled up about how regulators have it all wrong when it comes to crypto. Here’s 4 ways we can fight back… 📚 Educate — Invest more in explaining decentralisation, security, and blockchain. Let's bridge the understanding gap and shatter misconceptions. Coinbase isn't perfect, but they invest a lot into user education, and offer crypto-based rewards! 🔒 Responsible practices — Prioritise transparency, protect user data and assets, and promote ethical behaviour. We can't let a few tarnish the industry's image. Projects like Consensys are actively promoting ethical practices, and supporting developers to build apps responsibly. ReFi is a great example of how blockchain can be used for good. 💻 User-friendly interfaces — Simplify the experience without dumbing down the tech. Help users navigate crypto with confidence and clarity. For example, when we were building Launchpool at Avark, we used interface hints to prompt users to change their network during multi-chain transactions. The UI should guide without getting in the way. ⚖️ Self-regulation — Let's take the lead! Establish self-regulatory bodies to promote best practices and set guidelines. News about web3 is often spoiled by bad actors in the industry. Let's take responsibility and start managing our community. Proactivity will prove our commitment to the future. The biggest scams in web3 communities in 2024: 🤡 “decentralized decision-making” (so what) 🤡 “we’re working towards full decentralization” (so what) 🤡 “Network State” (so what) 🤡 “DAO governance” (so what) 🤡 “Transparent governance” (so what) 🤡 “introducing….our governance token for voting” (so what) 🤡 “We just put up our vision statement on the website” (so what) 🤡 “tokenomics” (so what) No one cares if you’re building a visionary “Network State” powered by crypto that’s verified on the blockchain. You’re almost def not running a DeFi protocol with billions of dollars in outflows. And don’t worry about planning ahead in case it happens, your community is not going to convert into the hottest DeFi protocol suddenly and without warning. ⚠️ Your members want individual attention by the community manager who greets them at the front door and asks them what their big struggles are this week, then creates a workshop around it. 🚫 Don’t overcomplicate community. 🚫 Don’t put the tech ahead of people. 🚫 Don’t put systems ahead of people. 🚫 Don’t assume people want tokens. 🚫 Don’t assume your material incentives are inherently valuable, even if people say they like them. And for godsake… 👏 Stop. 👏 Building. 👏 DAOs. Instead? ✅ Build relationships and introduce members to each other every week. ✅ Do the highly personalized, messy, impractical, time consuming, non-automated people-centric things that don’t scale in your community.
