Mason Studio’s A-Ha moment for September was centered around a topic we are passionate about - beyond design: food! ⁠ ⁠ Our conversation around how food as a unifier examined a variety of ideas, including: how food serves as a universal language, cultural traditions and heritage, a means of storytelling, how food can be a vessel for social change, all layered with personal experiences. ⁠ ⁠ Take-aways from this session:⁠ •how multigenerational living can impact consumption and experience⁠ •eating local, and being conscious of sources ⁠ •analyzing food from the lens of necessity or pleasure •how culture is layered through senses beyond food such as the environment where the meal is prepared and consumed, to the music played during that meal ⁠ •how food supports family health and well being⁠ ⁠ We look forward to dishing out more conversations about food in-studio and beyond. ⁠ ⁠ Photo by Thien Phan ⁠ Photo description: a group of people and a small dog sit on the ground below a yellow house-shaped structure. It can make us rethink consumption, create community, and reduce emissions. It can spark conversations, lead to innovative businesses and create memories. Food design can produce unexpected connections by dealing with a universal material. What makes a food designer? Creatives who believe in the power of nurturing, whether that is nurturing body or mind, humans or non-humans, an individual or a collective. What is Food Design today? Food design is necessary, to reflect on our consumption behaviour, especially since food is what we consume the most and a decision we need to take several times a day. While the world is dematerialising, food and water are physical materials we will continue to need in ever-rising quantities, which goes in hand with numerous problems. Food design today can offer solutions and opportunities to very different crises we are facing: from inflation, too hot summers, growing rates of loneliness, health problems or war trauma. On a lighter, but not less important note: it can make people laugh, enjoy, reflect and have fun. The opportunities are so vast; that is what I find most exciting. #fooddesign #fooddesignvoices

Can we help ourselves make better food choices? There is this very interesting concept called Choice Architecture. It stems from behavioural science, where rearranging elements of the environment can help people to make the 'right' choice. For instance, placing a bowl of fruit by the coffee machine while keeping the biscuit tin in the cupboard, or positioning the salad bar before the desserts in the canteen. By reshaping the place of things, we give ourselves a better chance of opting for something healthy without removing our agency in the decision-making process. In other words, we're nudging ourselves towards making the healthy choice, whilst still retaining our ability to choose. Pretty clever, eh? Of course, this technique can also be employed with different intentions. The food industry is a master of 'choice architecture,' devising ingenious ways to encourage us to make the 'right' choice… according to them! Have you noticed that you tend to pick up the products are that eye-sight when scrolling the food aisles? I'll include a link in the comments to an excellent article that Jemma Jessup wrote for Rocket Fuel Wellbeing. In it, she brilliantly dissects various marketing strategies, including 'choice architecture,' used to entice us into buying more food that we may not necessarily need! Bottom line: We need to continue putting pressure on our policymakers to reshape the food environment and regulate how food is marketed to us.  We also need to leverage the principles of 'choice architecture' to our advantage wherever we have a say: at home, in school, in hospitals, and, of course, at work!
