Remember back when the iPhone was introduced? Yes, Neil McClughan and I have been working together that long! On our 15th anniversary of working together to solve problems for our clients, Neil and I have been reflecting on our accomplishments.   We are proud of our ability to help our clients grow and become more effective and efficient. We have helped them create a path forward, improved governance and organizational structure, developed business cases, streamlined processes, assessed new revenue streams and opportunities to reduce costs, aligned technology to their current and future needs, and addressed organizational culture challenges (often the elephant in the room), all through a focus on strategic thinking, outcomes and collaboration. We developed and use a unique approach that has served us well. The individual skills and experience that we each have brought to our clients are a great complement to each other, providing effective advice and proven results.    We’re often asked, when are you going to retire? When we can achieve results and better outcomes for our clients and still enjoy working together, why would we stop?

Two lessons to live by. Time is non-refundable and aligning your vision with your personal goals is crucial.

In the mid-1980s, Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple Inc., faced a tumultuous period that would test his resilience and determination. Concurrently, Jobs acquired The Graphics Group, later known as Pixar Animation Studios.   Pixar went on to revolutionize the animation world, producing critically acclaimed films such as "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo." Meanwhile, NeXT played a crucial role in the evolution of the World Wide Web, contributing to advancements that would shape the digital landscape.   In a surprising turn of events, Apple acquired NeXT in 1996, bringing Steve Jobs back into the Apple fold. The prodigal son had returned. The quote, "Celebrate endings, for they precede new beginnings," resonated profoundly in Jobs' journey. The experiences gained during his time away from Apple fueled a renewed sense of purpose and innovation.   With Jobs at the helm once again, Apple underwent a remarkable transformation. The introduction of groundbreaking products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad reshaped entire industries. Apple, under Jobs' visionary leadership, became synonymous with innovation and design excellence.   The saga of Steve Jobs illustrates that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable endings, celebrating them can lead to unexpected and extraordinary new beginnings. Jobs' triumphant return to Apple stands as a testament to the transformative power of embracing change and leveraging it for future success. This week back in 1978, work began on a revolutionary new computer - the Apple Lisa - the world’s first commercial computer with a graphical user interface. And I had the enormous pleasure of talking with someone who was there at that time - John Couch, who was both Steve’s colleague and friend for many decades. Steve personally recruited John to help him build this “revolutionary computer" in 1978, just two years after Apple had started, and thus making John Apple’s 54th employee. Soon after, John became Apple's first Vice President of Software and then became General Manager, overseeing the Apple Lisa computer division. Prior to joining this new startup called Apple, John was one of the first fifty computer science graduates at University of California, Berkeley and had a well-paying, secure job working at HP, under the tutelage of its iconic founder, and a hero of Steve Jobs, Bill Hewlett. But. as he tells me, there was something about Steve’s vision that drew him in and made him leave his job at HP for the exciting yet vastly unknown. Six years later, John left Apple to work in education before becoming the CEO of a biotech company called DoubleTwist. He was then recruited again by Steve in 2002 and returned to Apple to take on the newly created role of Vice President of Education – a position he remained in until his recent retirement. In 2018, John co-wrote "Rewiring Education and this year, he published his latest book - “My Life at Apple and The Steve I Knew" which is a book we dig deeper into in this episode. As Steve Wozniak says, “John is one of the most interesting, intelligent, and passionate people I've ever met. Both Steve and I viewed him as an essential part of what made Apple the most innovative company in the world, even as he remained one of our best-kept secrets.” It's a great episode, and a wonderful peek into tech history. A bit of coincidence that I picked up the this book today and could immediately relate this to the "Exponential" innovation by Apple and *Steve Jobs*, who btw would have celebrated his 69th birthday today. Interesting to see how Apple transformed the digital mobile and music industry, and then examples of Henry Ford applying the car manufacturing lines from the meat packaging industry, or YouTube starting off as a dating site..and many more.. Essence being there are examples all around us from totally different businesses and industries, that we can apply to ours !
