Today is King Kamehameha I Day, a public holiday in Hawaiʻi honoring Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758-1819), who, in 1810, unified the Hawaiian islands and became Hawai‘i’s first king. King Kamehameha Day was first declared by Kamehameha V in 1871 to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha I. The first observance of the holiday happened in the following year. King Kamehameha I Day was one of the first holidays proclaimed by the Governor of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature when Hawaiʻi achieved statehood in 1959. In 1883 a statue of King Kamehameha was dedicated in Honolulu by King David Kalākaua (this was a duplicate because the original statue was temporarily lost at sea but was recovered and is now located in North Kohala, island of Hawaiʻi). This statue is duplicated in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., and in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Today, Kamehameha statues across Hawai‘i will be decorated with lei to honor the king’s memory. The 2024 theme is “He Inoa No Kalaninui Kamehameha – Honor to Kamehameha the Great.” This special day is marked with elaborate events that reflect ancient Hawai‘i and respect the cultural traditions that Kamehameha defended. Throughout the generations powers have vied for more power and consolidated against a common enemy. John's vision sows us powers consolidating against the Lamb, but it is a doomed effort in Revelation 17: "These are united in yielding their power and authority to the beast; they will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful." The message to the church in John's day is the message to all of God's people of every generation: Jesus, not Caesar, is Lord. Jesus is King. Those with him are chosen and faithful. Don't worry. ------------------------------- Historical note: The title King of Kings, possibly originating in Persia and other counties of the region, was a designation bestowed upon or adopted by ancient despots and rulers. Thus Rome is often encoded as Babylon in the book of Revelation and generally refers to mood and methods of empire that rise and fall through history, warring with the righteous. But Jesus is set forth as the King of Kings in every age and the Age to come. ------------------------------- https://lnkd.in/gShp2Uw2

The name 'Önundr,' with its Norse origins, is commonly interpreted to mean "victory of the ancestors." Some sources propose that Windermere might have been referred to as 'Onundr' for a certain period, possibly in honour of the Norse King. Our origins are intricately linked with the picturesque Windermere in the Lake District, and this meaningful association is the inspiration behind our company name, 'Onunda.' Has pilgrimage always been about religion or has it serve broader, non-secular purpose? How does the heritage of pilgrimage help shape its future? Dive into these topics and more with WMF Britain’s John Darlington; Strata Florida Trust's Professor David Austin; Dr. Guy Hayward, co-founder of The British Pilgrimage Trust ; and Rev. Kate Bottley, Vicar, Journalist, and Media Presenter in #London on July 3.
