Great article. Interesting analysis. Concerning. If you are anxiety- prone, skip this post. This article took courage to write, it takes courage to read and it will take courage to do something to avoid this seemingly inevitable ride into Death Valley.
As a presidential historian, I'm often asked hat I think about this year's race. Here's the answer in a piece I co-authored with former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert that ran last Sunday on the front page of the Dallas Morning News' Opinion Section. https://lnkd.in/gmXKFA2C

America is experiencing Mass Psychogenic Illness. It is described as the rapid spread of illness signs and symptoms affecting members of a cohesive group, Researchers say those affected are prone to extraversion or neuroticism, or those with low IQ scores, are more likely to be affected in an outbreak of hysterical epidemic, although it has not been consistently proven so far. Bartholomew and Wessely state that it "seems clear that there is no particular predisposition to mass sociogenic illness and it is a behavioural reaction that anyone can show in the right circumstances." Intense media coverage seems to exacerbate outbreaks. The illness may also recur after the initial outbreak. John Waller advises that once it is determined that the illness is psychogenic, it should not be given credence by authorities. For example, in the Singapore factory case study, calling in a medicine man to perform an exorcism seemed to perpetuate the outbreak. This is why many are puzzled why illogical people who idolize Trump cannot be convinced otherwise and any effort to use logic in their idol worship seem to exacerbate the problem. God help America.

Rangatahi | next generation leadership - there are currently around 1.6 million New Zealanders under the age of 25, representing about 33% of our population. This population is increasingly diverse, with more and more children and young people identifying with multiple ethnicities and identities. (Stats NZ). In the not too distant future, over half of our young people will not be ticking the box that says "NZ/European" on their census form, in fact about a third will be identifying as Māori. As a mother of a son in this generation, and having rangatahi leaders in my network to learn from like Liam McLeavey and Nate Whitfield I observe how they genuinely care and think critically about the wellbeing of all New Zealanders, look at equity issues, dig deep to find the evidence, and focus on a collective approach to this - and are unafraid to speak truth to power and challenge the sensible sounding policy sound bytes that attract the votes of older generations. This is different to how my "kiwi" generation (Gen X) and my parents (Boomer) were raised which was about hard work, survival through things we feel we can't control, individual property ownership and success and hopefully leaving a financial legacy for our children and grandchildren once we leave this earth. We also give to those in need in a charity and "fairness" sense with great intent from a place of privilege to do so in order to create "equality", so those people can have what we have, like a pair of shoes to go to school or whatever we think equals "success" that "they" are missing out on. Only a few of us though, dive much deeper into why inequities exist in a country where there is enough resources for everyone to live in wellbeing if we take a collective approach. We are the determined changemakers that drop our lens of expertise in what we think makes a successful and sustainable life and learn about other success models like that of indigenous peoples around sustainability in the context of the global world and the challenges we now face in terms of collective wellbeing of our people and planet An example is the interplay between a teen's digital life, social anxiety, school attendance following a pandemic, working during school hours to help the family budget, having access to what it takes to get to school and overall mental health as an example - the "experienced" academics, politicians and parents think they know best how to get "better outcomes" - but do they? Chloe is an elected member for Auckland Central two terms in a row whose work ethic as an MP is 2nd to none. She has been a student, advocate, business owner and many other roles in her community before being a politician. She works from an evidence base when developing policy. We need her, and her generation, in a leadership role to counter the sound bytes with evidence more than ever. Kia kaha cuz Chloe, you represent my son and my future mokos well, and therefore you represent me well too. - opinion

JOIN THE CLIMATE PARTY. BE A CANDIDATE IN THE COMING GENERAL ELECTION. Support the Climate Party for the #ClimateElection
Disgusting for an MP to back criminals! I was appalled to read that Sir Iain Duncan Smith is brazenly supporting people to break the law and cause criminal damage. He openly said he supported Londoners breaking and vandalising the #ULEZ cameras. What is the point in our #democracy (underpinned by our political and legal systems) if we support criminal activity targeted at undermining it? ULEZ is going ahead due to a democratically elected mayor driving through a policy originally encouraged by a democratically elected government. ULEZ is a policy truly created through interaction of democratically elected politicians from the #labourparty and the #conservativeparty . Criminal activity undertaken to try to undermine this process should be clearly and openly condemned by those same politicians. Both Conservative and Labour MPs have been conspicuously quiet about the criminal vandalism targeting ULEZ infrastructure. Their silence has been deafening and, in my opinion, showed a complete lack of integrity. They did not want to condemn this activity as it would make them appear to be in support of ULEZ which is ‘perceived’ as being unpopular. Those same MPs who remain so quiet about the ULEZ vandalism are often vociferous in their condemnation of #JustStopOil activists marching slowly and peacefully down a road blocking traffic for 5-30 minutes. That deafening silence has now been shattered by Sir Iain Duncan Smith who unbelievably supports the law breaking! The Climate Party was set up was to play into the current democratic system and provide a platform within that existing system for climate conscious voters on all political sides to have the opportunity to make their voice heard without breaking the law. We are the only party focussed 100% on solving the #ClimateCrisis and seeing that Britain takes advantage of the associated commercial opportunities. Unlike Sir Iain Duncan Smith we are against law breaking, we agree with and support legal protest in all its forms but do not accept illegal protest – we are changing British politics and the system without breaking the law. We believe ULEZ could be implemented better (the Climate Party wrote to Sadiq Khan to suggest how this could be done), we also believe there should be a rapid move away from fossil fuels, we do not believe that this should be achieved through criminal activity – if you agree then join us as we move towards the #ClimateElection. https://lnkd.in/eHpSp-t8 #climateparty #bladerunners #climateopportunity Greenpeace CAFOD Oxfam #greenparty #libdem #greenjobs #protest Sadiq Khan Alice Stuttaford Jamie Bullen Ewan Somerville Andrew Ellson

Dovetail® founder & CEO - CareTech solutions for today's families | host of the AND/BOTH podcast | Mom | Speaker
Golf was both the best and worst answer to a question about childcare- when you consider terms like “golf widow” exist for a reason. Having a faceoff about handicaps and driving distance in a sport that requires hours of time on the course and away from family to improve at… is a great example of how out of touch politicians are with the day to day managing families are doing in the midst of this childcare crisis. 15,000 moms signed Moms First’s petition to even get the question into the debate. There are over 50 million families in the US, too many for maternal health and paid family leave to not be front and center for both candidates. The didn’t address either topic. In the past Biden has spoken about his experience with childcare after losing his wife and daughter, saying he took the train to DC because he could afford a train ticket but not childcare. This was in 1972. He was a senator. He was able to continue working because his sister and brother in law moved into his home to help with his boys. Another privilege that many American families don’t have- free help from family members. Let’s not forget the impact on sandwich caregivers- those raising kids in a childcare crisis while also providing more unpaid caregiving hours for aging adults than medicaid. Childcare costs more than rent in all 50 states. The birth rate is declining and has been for several decades. We all saw how far off the balance was during the pandemic. Time for a plan.
American moms: help? Presidential candidates: ok, but about my golf game… 🙄 It shouldn’t be like this. We can demand better. Make your voice heard in the ballot box: text MOTHER to 26797 and #VoteLikeAMother this year.
