When I took the helm as Chairman of Amélie Les Huîtres, I faced an extraordinary challenge. The brand was in dire straits: saddled with debt, embroiled in a judicial recovery process, and a legacy of unserved clients and unpaid employees. This period became a master class in corporate restructuring for me. We tackled the debt, streamlined operations, knocked 3 subsidiaries and devised a fresh, viable strategy. Our journey was fuelled by renewed capital from existing shareholders, who believed in our vision to set sail anew ⛵️. We've not just survived; we've flourished, securing partnerships with elite names like Gritti, Four Seasons, Mandarin, and Bulgari in prestigious locales from St. Moritz to Singapore. 🔍 Our transformation hinged on crafting a new model of agile, effective global sales force and revolutionizing our marketing approach. The result? A legacy of excellence and leadership in global markets. We closed 2023 with the historic integration of our main supplier, Huitres Lambert. This merger not only ensures control over quality and margins but also unifies our strengths under the Groupe Ostrea umbrella, managing two distinct brands: Amélie and Lambert. 🌏 As we step into 2024, my focus as Chairman of Groupe Ostrea is clear. Our next challenge is to sculpt a luxury oyster group driven by CSR values, aiming for a 15% EBITDA and rapid growth. My newly-found friend and all-around brilliant person, Billee Howard, co-founder of BRANDthrō and Forbes contributor, recently interviewed Julia Klim VP of Strategic Partnerships at Equinox. Among the plethora - yes, he said plethora - of gems that came from the conversation was something Julia said in regards to getting new ideas off the ground, particularly in the context of corporate America (or really anywhere in the world.) "The idea is never the hard part, nor is the execution. Convincing others that your idea is what should be prioritized in a world of limited resources is often the blocker. The ideas that are different also often require new organizational muscle and retraining. So how do you do it? You first have to have a really good story – storytelling is key. Then you need to lead with empathy, listen and find ways in which your story and idea can help those involved. And, if that doesn’t work, you go to what is tried and true –relationships and leading with empathy." All of this is gold, Jerry, gold. (Kenny Banya fans unite) In reading the interview, and in particular the excerpt above, I could not help but be reminded of something I wrote many moons ago which I titled "The 6 Most Dangerous Words In History" The 6 words are: 1. THAT'S 2. HOW 3. IT'S 4. ALWAYS 5. BEEN 6. DONE ...which ties directly into the "new organizational muscle and retraining" Julia refers to. And the older (READ: Legacy) the brand is, the more retraining you will need to do because you're fighting the "old guard" and the old way of doing things because, hey... that's how it's always been done. With this acquisition, Lalique will further develop synergies with the crystal and hospitality business. Meanwhile, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey will benefit from increased visibility and will be able to raise its profile with existing and new target groups. This man has no idea - zero idea - he put them in this position - all by himself (with some help from Mark Z). It's like asking the iceberg what the Titanic did wrong. The only reasons they were (were) the leaders in Canada were: 1. He had a $5 billion advantage over everyone else 2. He went first and big The reason they are now looking ready to go insolvent are: 1. He lost the $5 billion, plus more 2. He got beat by better (and most everything else was better), because, he's not a CPG business person, not even close - his products were not good and his execution was sloppy. He's a stock promoter - listen to him - everything he talks about is about stocks - nothing about consumer research or segmentation or value proposition or pricing strategy or anything that real CPG companies and people who understand it, talk about. Slowly, too slowly, companies are walking away from him, and interviewers too. Speed it up already.
