Headlining this week's CHC.NewDirections, a CHC.Newsflash Extra: Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers have developed a vibrating, ingestible capsule that could offer a cost-effective way to treat obesity (Science Advances, 22 December). When the stomach is full, it sends signals to the brain that create a feeling of fullness. Vibrations from the new capsule – known as VIBES (Vibrating Ingestible Bioelectronic Stimulator) – are said to activate the same stretch receptors that sense when the stomach is distended, creating an illusory sense of fullness. In animal tests, consuming the pill 20 minutes before eating not only stimulated the release of hormones that signal satiety, but also reduced food intake by around 40%. The animals also gained weight more slowly during periods when they were treated with the vibrating pill. The researchers say the capsule could offer an alternative to the current approaches to treating obesity and could be manufactured “at a pretty cost-effective price point”. They are now exploring ways to increase manufacture to enable clinical trials in humans. The research was part-funded by the The National Institutes of Health and Novo Nordisk.
