Meditation is like any other skill. You’ve got to put in the time and effort, but it gets easier once you make it a daily habit and begin seeing the benefits. Trust me: It changes everything. As an adult, I became passionate about meditation, attending 10-day retreats where I meditated up to 12 hours a day. I studied Buddhism in college, and meditation remained an integral part of my life. As you probably know too well, real life can interfere with creating time for oneself or even the inclination to meditate, and for me, eventually, it fell by the wayside. Just thinking about the zillion tasks I juggle every day makes my head spin: Managing a Functional Medicine clinic at a major hospital, seeing patients at my own practice, writing books, and attending to tons of other work obligations. I balance these duties with regular exercise, eating healthy, and sleeping 8-10 hours every night. So, OK, no jury in the world would convict me when I say I don’t have time to meditate, right? Until one day, my good friend, Emily Fletcher, helped me rekindle my meditation fire by reminding me that meditation could help me feel better and happier. She was right. I felt happier, calmer, less anxious, and more energized or filled with energy. Before, I felt tired at the end of a long day; now, I am alert and far more productive. You’ll quickly discover that once you calm your mind, making smarter choices about food and exercise is much easier. Your relationships get better. Literally, everything in your life improves. If you’re not sure where to start, try out a few meditation apps or videos and see which works best for you. You can also start by closing your eyes and breathing in and out for a couple of minutes. Have you tried meditation, and have you felt any benefits from it? Meditation and breath work are among my favourite forms of mindfulness practises that I’ve been consciously incorporating into my life for the past 6 years. It’s done wonders for me to remove the noise from my “monkey mind” and allow me to fully focus and appreciate the present moment. In addition to regulating my emotions and mental state, it also supports me with sleeping better and how I show up in my relationships whether it be professional or personal. I truly believe if everyone in the world learned to tame their thoughts and emotions through conscious effort and meditation, it can bring about a more positive change globally ❤️🙏

I've been practicing different forms of meditation for 48 years since I was 22 and have been on many retreats in that time, especially in earlier days. Just reading some of the comments show us the diversity of peoples approach. However, as you describe, life can get in the way and break down our habit. It takes discipline to become established in any form of meditation or prayer life, and that's why it's also called devotions. Since around the age of 50, I've become more and more disciplined in following good healthful habits that nurture mind, body, soul and spirit. As an entrepreneur I work full days Monday to Friday and rise without an alarm clock between 3.30 - 4am and aim to get down to work at 7am, sometimes 6am, (and work to 5pm) so there's no excuse to not do my devotions, which also includes exercise and reading the Bible. But it starts the night before with prioritising sleep. 8 to 10 hours seems a lot of sleep. I'm good on 6 to 7 hours and am jumping out my skin with that. But we're all different with different needs. I know 'clean' eating once a day with a 22 hour fasting window and my dietary supplements through the day with plenty of water and sampling teas give me the edge with energy and vitality.

Meditation provides clarity of mind and enhances overall focus. When you have a few moments to settle your mind, there is a peace which you enter into that surpasses understanding 🫶🏽.. Clarity breeds confidence 🎯🎯

The eastern style of meditation is only one form of effective meditation. I know personally of at least one more. It is markedly different from Buddhist meditation. I know that both types are highly effective and useful in life. I am not arguing with you. I am adding to your points above. To add to your point about the value of meditation: You will thank yourself at the end of your life when you can say, I lived well. I am satisfied with my life. I have achieved the highest possible levels of human development. That level is a highly productive, calm, peaceful and quiet mind. My relationships with others are as good as can be expected. The ability to think clearly is without parallel in life. There is no greater achievement.

I've personally noticed a 20min meditation session is much more effective and restful than a 20min nap. Meditation is definitely a powerful tool for physical and mental health.

Yes 👍🏻 When I started a simple meditation before sleep - I noticed I could sleep deeper. I’m not sure about holding breath I was trained that those with hypertension and heart Dis ease were not to hold their breath? Has this guideline changed? Thanks for the info!! ☮️🙏🏻💗

I certainly wish I'd come across it earlier in life.

I couldn't agree more! I've been practicing sitting meditation for over 30 years. Even though I am not sure exactly what happens, I always feel better, and my days always go better. I'm so passionate about meditation that I'm launching a dedicated community to support anyone to have a regular and deepening meditation practice. Mark, check it out if that sounds interesting to you: https://www.sittinglab.com/
