Next up in our ‘day in the life of women in construction’ campaign - to mark #careersinconstruction month - is the field of fire engineering. Take it away Emily…! 🙌🏼 Name: Emily Cooper Job role: Senior Fire Engineer Employer: PartB Years in current role: 4 years What does a typical day in the life of a fire engineer look like to you? When asking a search engine what a Fire Engineer does, it will tell you that we design buildings in a way that minimises fire risk or fire spread. Although true, that doesn’t really depict the true detail of the job role, or give you a real understanding about what a typical day could look like in this job. It’s always very dependent upon the project; the main areas I work on are: - Fire Risk Appraisals of External wall construction, - Reclad projects, - Retrospective fire strategies of existing buildings, - Fire strategies of new buildings in all sectors, following RIBA stages 1-6, and - Fire Statements. The work required can differ and any ‘typical’ day may require me to do any of the following: - Understand regulations and legislations and keep up to date with latest design guidance. - Attend site where necessary to walk around the building, assess compartmentation, smoke control arrangements, fire service access, and means of escape. - Review 3D scans produced by the forensic site team. - Review existing surveys, design details, elevations and locations for the forensic site team to undertake intrusive surveys. - Consult with contractors, mechanical and electrical engineers and architects. - Assist in the productions of architectural designs and provide recommendations to improve fire safety within a building. - Liaise with approval authorities including Building Control, Fire and Rescue Service and the Building Safety Regulator. - Produce GAP analyses for retrospective Fire Strategies (which bridge the difference between the guidance at the time of construction to modern day statutory requirements). - Write reports. Advice for those aspiring for a similar career? Do your research on the company you want to work for. My job is very flexible, but this is very much down to the company I work with. The company you work for can really affect your outlook on the job. Most days are in the office, which is home-based for me and adds additional flexibility, but there is the option to go to an office. Some days I am required on site, which adds diversity and excitement to the job but also means the hours aren’t always 9 to 5.
