Karan learned the ropes of social insight in an experimental, hacker-style environment which helped him hone his skills at problem-solving using social data.   Now Karan uses social data to consult across all business units at Netflix and helps the content and marketing teams to make decisions inspired by consumer behaviours.   We asked Karan if there are any mistakes he has made and learnt from? “Over-representing social data. I learned that social, while rich in insights, is just one part of the larger conversation. It's important to view social data as a piece of the puzzle. Sometimes, social might give you the first piece of evidence that sparks discovery, and sometimes it's the piece that brings the insight home. 🔍 ANALYZING FINANCIAL INFLUENCERS: Wisdom in the Noise In the age of information overflow, social media has become a pervasive influence, especially in the realm of financial decisions. The recent research paper, "Finfluencers," by Ali Kakhbod, Seyed Mohammad Kazempour, Dmitry Livdan, and Norman Schuerhoff from the Swiss Finance Institute, delves into the intriguing world of financial influencers and the value, or lack thereof, in their advice. 📊 Key Findings: The study categorizes finfluencers into three groups: skilled, unskilled, and antiskilled, based on tweet-level data from StockTwits. Shockingly, only 28% of finfluencers provide valuable investment advice, yielding monthly abnormal returns of 2.6%. On the flip side, a staggering 56% are antiskilled, generating -2.3% monthly abnormal returns. 🤔 The Antiskilled Phenomenon: Antiskilled finfluencers, those with negative skill, paradoxically attract more followers and wield more influence on retail trading than their skilled counterparts. The study attributes this to the persistence of users' beliefs shaped by antiskilled influencers, leading to excessive trading and inefficient prices. 📈 Contrarian Wisdom: In a twist, the paper suggests a contrarian strategy – going against the advice of antiskilled finfluencers. Aptly termed the "wisdom of the antiskilled crowd," this strategy yields abnormal out-of-sample returns of 1.2% monthly. The research emphasizes the significance of message over messenger, as followers tend to trade based on the message rather than the finfluencer's skill. 📚 Persistence and Determinants of Skills: The study explores the persistence of users' skills, revealing that skilled finfluencers are less active in tweeting. Additionally, users posting more negative tweets tend to be more skilled, highlighting the informative nature of negativity in financial discussions. 📊 Insights for the Industry: These findings prompt a critical evaluation of the financial advice landscape on social media. Investors and industry professionals should consider the potential pitfalls of blindly following influencers, especially those with negative skill. Researchers have unveiled startling insights into the world of financial influencers on social media platforms. The study, which analyzed tweet-level data, found a high dispersion and systematic bias in the quality of advice provided by these influencers. While 28% of finfluencers are skilled and generate a monthly abnormal return of 2.6%, a majority of 56% possess negative skill ("antiskill"), leading to a -2.3% monthly abnormal return. Even more surprising is that these antiskilled finfluencers command larger followings and exert more influence on retail trading than their skilled counterparts. The implications: the advice of antiskilled finfluencers often results in overly optimistic beliefs and persistent swings in followers' beliefs, causing excessive trading and inefficient market prices. Interesting research paper on social media financial influencers ("finfluencers") which looked at the investment performance of finfluencers and their social media activity. The study found that the highest follower count finfluencers generated consistent negative returns, and the highest activity finfluencers were less likely to be skilled. In short, investors are attracted to the worst performing social media accounts. Mind you, I don't feel so bad about my own low follower count now. #investing #researchpaper #socialmedia
