Elizabeth Renter Elizabeth Renter is an Influencer

Senior Economist at NerdWallet, focused on economic data/trends, jobs, home affordability & consumer spending, saving, debt and credit. I also lead our data studies team.

It’s official! I’ve graduated with my Masters of Science in Finance and Economics from West Texas A&M University College of Business! Pursuing grad school full time while working full time was one of the most demanding experiences of my life. So, what’s next? Well, I’m excited to announce even more good news – I am officially stepping into a new role as NerdWallet’s Senior Economist! I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my career so far. Prior to joining NerdWallet a decade ago, I cut my teeth as a freelance writer—this period of drumming up jobs across a variety of topics gave me much of the tenacity and creativity I carry with me today. In my early years at NerdWallet, I discovered a  love of data journalism, and was given the opportunity to lean into that, producing studies across many personal finance topics. I spent most of the last decade leading data journalism best practices across our large editorial team. Most recently, as NerdWallet’s Senior Writer and Data Analyst, I’ve led our study program, analyzing economic and consumer sentiment data to publish insights that help people make better sense of their money and the economy. I’ve also deepened my industry knowledge through memberships in organizations such as Investigative Reporters and Editors, National Association for Business Economics (NABE) and the American Economic Association; a SABEW data journalism fellowship; and certifications in economic measurement, probability, data visualization and more. Empowering people to make informed decisions about their finances is at the heart of my journey. And as I step into this new role, I can’t help but reflect on my own journey. I’m a single parent who was raised by a single parent. Money decisions were about being careful and conscientious about every dime spent and being a scrappy problem-solver when money was too tight to cover the expenses. When I was young, I was resentful of this, but when I became a parent, I was grateful for the foundation. Early in my daughter’s life, these lessons were crucial for keeping the lights on, quite literally. And now that I’m financially secure, these lessons still underpin how I think about money and how I talk about it in my work. As Senior Economist, I’m looking forward to continuing that journey and using my unique vantage point at NerdWallet to break down complex economic trends and news, analyze how those trends are directly impacting consumers, and explain how they are shaping consumer perception, sentiment and behavior. I’ll continue to focus on areas that matter most – the job and housing markets, inflation rates, education, saving, spending, and more. I’ll still be posting my regular LinkedIn updates dissecting the latest macro trends, and will continue to lead our study and data program. Thank you to the team at NerdWallet for creating a supportive and inclusive environment, and thank you to all who follow and turn to us for financial clarity. Cheers!
