Streaming and TV companies are removing content from their platforms - even brand new, unaired shows - in order to reduce their tax bills. It seems counterintuitive (surely if you've completed filming on a show, you let subscribers watch it and perhaps drive new subscriptions); but TV shows and movies are ultimately corporate assets, just like office space and furniture, I guess... #netflix #disneyplus #streaming https://lnkd.in/eazbCMbY

The 2023 Emmys may mark the end of an era, as prestige TV shows like Succession, Better Call Saul and others conclude their runs amid industry turmoil. Studios are facing layoffs, streaming is proving expensive, and viewership of niche shows is disappointing. The industry is shifting back to mass appeal hits. If streaming doubles down on broad appeal shows, it could erase what made subscribers pay for these services in the first place - the daring, prestige content. A third possibility: as streamers go mass, a new platform could arise to serve the underserved demand for niche, quality shows. Just as HBO did 30 years ago. #HBO #TVhistory #comeback #prestigeTV #Emmys #streaming #Hollywood #TVhistory #hbo #subscribers #streamingwars https://lnkd.in/ezduZZGZ

25 years since the Soprano's... And I agree with all the buzz and hype the writing is great - and this show changed the game for TV. Indeed, it is one of the handful of shows that brilliantly captures the darkness and bright spots of human experience and allows the viewer to feel a full range of emotions. The characters are complex (and that is what makes them so relatable) and so are our feelings toward them. So, what does this have to do with #compliance? Besides the very obvious ties to organized crime "Tony is the ultimate unreliable narrator." When Meadow asks Tony if he is in the mafia, he famously replies "I'm in the waste management business. Everybody immediately assumes you're mobbed up. It's a stereotype. And it's offensive... There is no Mafia." Sounds like running a compliance #investigation to me - people are complex and tell stories through their lens: ❌ You can not like someone making a compliant, but still need to investigate. 👀 You build a speak up culture that hopefully avoids the Omertà in your organization- you know the code to not cooperate with an investigation under any circumstances 📺 Like viewers of a TV show, as investigators, we must pull together the pieces of these stories and view it from the lens of objectivity. We get to see the big picture and the facts say, yes Tony, the mafia, does exist. #compliance #investigations #ethics #culture #speakup
"Lately, I’m getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over.” This single line of dialogue sums up so much about turn-of-the-millennium television. After the 1970s and ’80s saw constant innovation in what television could accomplish, the late ’90s plateaued with the most palatable and least risky options: rote sitcoms, generic crime procedurals, and monster-of-the-week genre shows. HBO, however, had always positioned itself as being “not TV,” and the first episode of its most influential show proved it could back that claim up. Not only did “The Sopranos,” the iconic crime drama’s self-titled pilot, put HBO on the cutting edge of innovative television, but it also ushered in a new age of TV so influential we just call it “Peak TV” now. #contentstrategy #programming #contentdevelopment #contentfranchises #IP #peakTV #streaming #contentbrands #HBO #HBOeffect #thesopranos #storytelling #storyworlds #storydevelopment #characterdevelopment #prestigeTV #scriptedseries #prestigedrama #notTV #crimedramas #newageTV #goldenageofTV https://buff.ly/3SeAng9

'By dropping all of its episodes at once, though, Netflix has robbed the show’s biggest moments of their weight. It’s made the show something viewers can watch at their own pace, which has made the wider conversation around it frustratingly diffuse. That’s a far cry from the kind of engagement #GameofThrones not only cultivated but encouraged. The further away we get from it, the more it looks like Game of Thrones may have been television’s last true #eventshow. From 2014 to 2019, watching Game of Thrones felt like a lingering #monocultural experience in a digital world that had stamped such experiences out. That phenomenon has further faded in the years since the HBO series ended. The proliferation of Netflix’s #binge model is partly to blame, as is the growing glut of #streamingplatforms. It’s never been harder for a TV show to rise above the noise and capture millions of eyeballs simultaneously. Game of Thrones did it. Could #3BodyProblem have done it? It’s impossible to say, but the potential was there. It wasn’t given the chance to act on it.' I am not sure #appointmentTV is dead. '3 Body Problem' simply didn't capture it. #popculture #Netflix #BenioffandWeiss
