“Story is King” This is the first principle Ed Catmull and the team at Pixar Animation Studios identified following the hard-earned success with the first #ToyStory. This point is exemplified with Joe Barrett's article in The Wall Street Journal. Quick summary: as part of an environmental assessment, the National Park Service (NPS) is considering removing horses (or reducing their number) from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. These horses have a large and devoted following, both online and as part of a regular stream of tourists to #northdakota. The public is able to provide public comments as part of the assessment and the input is decidedly in favor of keeping the horses. Before I go further, I want to say that I consider NPS a national treasure. The access and opportunity we have to hundreds of breathtaking sites is truly a miracle. And further, NPS has an amazing talent for narrative - see https://lnkd.in/enCGz6ZE so this specific example is an outlier for NPS that is a useful case study for the power of story. NPS has what appears to be a solid set of facts: ✔ It’s not clear the horses have strong historical ties to the land. ✔ The intent is to preserve the truly native prairie ecosystem, which includes animals such as bison and elk. ✔ They are engaging the public openly. But however valid the arguments and however this turns out, NPS did not engage in compelling storytelling, especially considering the powerful narrative attached to the horses. It will probably lose goodwill even if they decide to make no changes. Story is King The narrative of the horses is robust: ❗ It harkens back to history–this is the Badlands where Theodore Roosevelt became a rancher. ❗ It has characters–there is a stallion named Arrowhead who stopped a car so his injured brother Copper could cross the road. ❗ It symbolizes a way of life and a future that many Americans feel pulled towards, one of greater connection to nature and to the vastness of the prairie. Further, the narrative context is a huge factor: 🐎 We are in the moment of Taylor Sheridan. #Yellowstone averaged 11 million weekly viewers during the 2022-2023 run (https://lnkd.in/eAZbHYxi) and #Lioness had the most-watched global premier on Paramount+ (https://lnkd.in/eZt5hraa). The narrative of the horses taps powerfully into this media landscape that now draws in tens of millions of Americans every single week. ➡ Story is King - Humans respond to stories on an emotional level. Well-told stories will beat facts any day. But stories can also be factual. It’s not an either / or. ➡ Narrative context matters - storytelling never happens in a void. Even with targeted advertising, audiences are always traversing narrative landscapes that influences how they will receive your message. #leadership #polarization #storytelling #parks #tv

This one took much longer than expected and it honestly isn't my greatest work. I recently finished Baldur's Gate 3 and immediately began working on this. In this blog I compare and contrast the Nine layers of hell in Dungeons and Dragons / Baldur's Gate 3 and Dante's Inferno. Warning, it is one of my longer ones. #DnD #dungeonsanddragons #baldursgate3 #Larianstudios #history https://lnkd.in/gPNk8ZSt
