August 30, 1862: In the American Civil War, the second battle of Bull Run or Manassas is fought in Virginia, fairly close to Washington, D.C. The second battle occurs about thirteen months after the first battle. As in the first battle, the Confederates emerge victorious. Confederate forces named the battle Manassas after the nearest town. Union forces named the battle Bull Run after the nearest body of water. Dr. Holowchak Presents: The Civil War, Causes & Consequences The Civil War is customarily said to have been fought over slavery. [PDF] American Civil War Fortifications 1 Angus Konstam, Donato Spedaliere digsell https://lnkd.in/ezU8dKFn The 50 years before the American Civil War saw a boom in the construction of coastal forts in the United States of America. These stone and brick forts stretched from New England to the Florida Keys, and as far as the Mississippi River. At the start of the war some were located in the secessionist states, and many fell into Confederate hands. Although a handful of key sites remained in Union hands throughout the war, the remainder had to be won back through bombardment or assault. In the aftermath of the decisive Battle of Dover, the Norman forces, led by William the Conqueror, set their sights on the city of London. This historic city, known for its strategic and symbolic significance, became the focal point of resistance against the Norman invasion. However, after a series of intense confrontations and negotiations, London eventually succumbed to the Normans. The surrender of London marked a crucial turning point in the Norman Conquest of England, solidifying William's control over the capital and paving the way for his ultimate ascension to the throne. As the Normans advanced towards London, they encountered fierce opposition from the English forces and the city's defenders. The English, under the leadership of Edgar the Ætheling, put up a spirited defense, realizing the strategic importance of holding the capital against the invaders. The resistance in London symbolized the determination of the English people to protect their city and resist the Norman Conquest. Recognizing the challenges posed by the fortified city and the strong English resistance, William the Conqueror sought a diplomatic solution. Negotiations ensued between William and the citizens of London, exploring the possibility of a peaceful surrender. The English leaders, understanding the inevitability of Norman control, ultimately decided to negotiate favorable terms rather than face further bloodshed and destruction. What were the terms of surrender?
