Call for experts: Join ICVCM's Multi-Stakeholder Working Groups to support carbon credit category assessments After publishing the full CCPs and Assessment Framework earlier this year, we are now looking for experts to join our Multi-Stakeholder Working Groups to help assess categories of carbon credits in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket against the CCP criteria. We are specifically looking for carbon crediting methodology experts, including methodology development and project development (from any sector, such as civil society, environmental non-government organisations, commercial, rating experts, carbon crediting programmes, public sector.) Experts in the MSWGs will conduct deeper assessment of carbon credit categories against the #CoreCarbonPrinciples, covering areas such as agriculture, forestry, land-use, energu, transport and industrial gases. ❓Could this be you? Natural capital is important for a resilient and sustainable economy – particularly for the Australian agriculture and land sector.   The Clean Energy Finance Corporation’s recent report, ‘Measuring what matters: An approach for natural capital investors’, is a practical guide for institutional investors in the natural capital arena to enhance assessment of decarbonisation activities.   Drawing on the CEFC’s experience as an investor, this guide identifies opportunities to provide both financial and environmental outcomes in agriculture and forestry investments. The Resource Innovation Institute (RII), a not-for-profit public-private partnership, has unveiled its Controlled Environment Agriculture Energy & Water Benchmarking Report: Establishing Preliminary Benchmarks. This report, a result of a collaboration with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), emphasizes the water-saving potential of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). Derek Smith, Executive Director of RII, stated, “The data clearly shows the water-saving potential of CEA. This report is a crucial step in understanding resource utilization in controlled environments. However, more in-depth research is needed to identify the most efficient energy and water pathways truly.” Read more below!

The Future of CCS - Part 1 Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a hot issue right now, since it was mentioned in the latest presidential election debate in Indonesia.   To put it simply, CCS is a variety of techniques used to trap and store carbon dioxide (CO2) by utilizing the latest technologies. While CCS certainly has its merits in capturing carbon emissions from industrial sources, nature-based solutions align more closely with my belief in harnessing the inherent power of nature.   For years, Nature-based solutions (NBS) like planting trees and restoring wetlands have been our shield against the rising tide of environmental chaos. They suck up carbon, filter pollution, and bolster life ecosystems, all while creating jobs and revitalizing communities. In 2011, the ASEAN Social Forestry Network reported that up to 70 million people rely on forests for their livelihoods. The close relationships between forests and the surrounding communities are highly symbiotic.   But let's be honest, Nature-based solutions has its own limitations as well. Progress often takes time, monitoring can be patchy, and reaching remote areas of any country often feels like climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops.

With the week coming to an end, here are the most recent updates from our Advocacy efforts: This week, ACEC-Ontario met with the office of the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry's office. We discussed ways for ACEC-Ontario to get involved in the ministry's consultations and other projects. ACEC-Ontario had the privilege to sponsor the Ontario Public Buyers Association conference that is being held on October 5th-6th, 2023. Our Team had the opportunity to not only introduce one of the sessions at the meeting but also interacted with procurement officials from municipalities and provincial/municipal government agencies. This allowed us to showcase the consulting engineering industry and explore opportunities for closer collaboration. Our London Chapter and ACEC-Ontario staff met with City of London Mayor Josh Morgan this week. We had a positive discussion on the City’s engineering services agreement, the benefits of Qualifications Based Selection (QBS), and the importance of proper risk allocation. Additionally, we discussed the importance of the City of London Housing Pledge and the urgency of addressing this community need as swiftly as possible through a collaborative, multi-sector effort. (Photo Attached) Our team also had a meeting with the City of Toronto staff. We discussed the advantages of QBS, the City’s circular procurement framework, and plan to create a circular economy framework in Toronto. Lastly, ACEC-Ontario recently joined the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s Energy Policy Council. This past week, staff attended a meeting with the Energy Policy Council (EPC), as well as an EPC meeting with the Ministry of Energy. Many important issues were discussed, including the Electrification and Energy Transition Panel, the Federal Clean Electricity Regulations and the locates backlog.
