Most sales and sales leadership job descriptions will say “X years of sales experience” I think it’s pointless... You can’t just hire people that “know sales” I’ll use a sports analogy cause it’s college football Saturday! That would be the equivalent of requiring 10 years of football experience. That doesn’t let me know how you would or wouldn’t be helpful to my team. - What position? Skills to be a a great quarterback are much different than a wide receiver and even more different than a linebacker. - What level/league? High school is very different than professional football. Even diving into professional football, the NFL is a completely different world than the Canadian Football League. Back to the tech sales world: Many people reach out and say they have 10 years of sales experience so they’d be great for X role. Sales experience can vary greatly, it all depends on what kind of sales person you need. - B2B vs B2C - SMB vs F500 - $25M ARR vs $1B ARR - Transactional vs Enterprise - Start Up vs Public Company - Selling to IT vs Selling to Marketing I’d take someone with half the overall experience, if it’s the right experience for your company, at your stage, in your industry. #sales #careerdevelopment #hiring

Tennis/sports comparison to AE hiring. Hopefully worth the read even if you only care about the AE part. As my 4.5 tennis season ends, I sacrificed a lot of playing time to be on the winning team. During huge matches, I desperately wanted play. I texted our captain giving him reasons why others should play over me. Even though I am a similar level as these teammates -- these teammates gave us a better chance to win than me. No idea why athletes making millions can't do the same. While experiencing this, it also got my mind racing on how to interview for a "we vs me" attitude for sales candidates. How can you test if an AE looks at accounts as a land of abundance or scarcity? How can you test if an AE will knowledge share and level up their teammates? If an AE truly believes SDR's are peers and not "below them"/works alongside of them? If an AE has the business acumen and unselfishness to agree that some decision's need to be made that might not benefit them? If an AE gets genuine fulfillment out of seeing their peers succeed? Competes against their own potential more than others? I want to learn how to level up my interviewing before we eventually hire AEs at Toplyne. Any content, books and/or people to follow? The best interviewing lesson I learned was via Sam East -- unless it's a definitive yes, it's a no. #BensBest #Sales #SaaS #Hiring #JobInterviews

MBA Candidate Graziadio School of Business | Sales | Recruiting | Human Capital & Business Transformation | Organizational & Leadership Change | Artificial Intelligence | Leadership Development
How are Sports and Sales related? Sports and Sales surprisingly are very much interrelated in many ways. How so? You might be asking 🤔 look down 👇 -Sports and Sales are both individual and team driven. Ex: When I played Water Polo in College I was apart of a team and we worked together to achieve a common goal. When I entered my 1st Sales Organization the Sales team was group focused on group success and group performance. Fast forward to my role as a Recruiter I’m in an individual contributor role and drive Sales, Matrix, KPIs and I’m driven by own performance. - Sports and Sales are highly competitive and competition is fierce sometimes. Ex: when I 1st got into recruiting I would hear “candidate took a competitors offer” to some effect. In Sales I’ve learned you’re not the only person and or company they’ve had a conversation with and sometimes it’s hard to hear the words “we went with someone else or I took another offer because benefits package was bigger” -Finally: Sports and Sales are driven by numbers. Ex: When I worked in my agency staffing days every 1st of the month and end of a Quarter we would have a company wide meeting and listen to various managers and partners talk about end of quarter performance numbers such as conversion rates, leads, and finally total sales versus company goal. After such a meeting you have your own 1:1 conversations with manager to go over your performance to discuss numbers, KPIs etc. At one point I was told I did a record breaking 14 placements in one 1️⃣ quarter. I will leave you with this and if you are in #sales #recruiting or a matrix driven organization I hope you have an amazing day and go crush it.

Why do most sales leaders use sports analogies when talking about strategy or execution 🤔? Sales leaders often use sports analogies because they are relatable, universally understood, and convey a sense of competition, teamwork, and striving for victory. These analogies help simplify complex business strategies and motivate sales teams. “We can’t score if we don’t work together “We are at the goal line and need to punch through with max effort to close the month” “Be the QB of your sales team. “You can’t hit a home run if you don’t take a swing at the opportunity” What are some sports analogies you have heard in your sales career?
