2023 has been a year of joyful reunions, each meeting with an old friend reigniting warm, nostalgic feelings. These gatherings have become a theme, offering chances to reconnect and recall fond memories, underscoring the lasting nature of friendship.
One such reunion was with Anuraag Guptaa, a mentor and colleague. He was visiting Bangalore, and to avoid traffic, we met at the new T2 Terminal. Our connection dates back to 2019, discussing the gig economy while I was at EY, heading GigNow.
Me: Anuraag, it's been too long! Great to see you. How's everything?
Anuraag: Doing well! Continuing to do what I love and meeting fantastic people like you. What's new with you? How was IIMA?
Me: Transformative. I loved it at IIMA, but Bangalore beckoned me back. I'm now with Noble House Consulting Pte., a marketplace for independent consultants.
Anuraag: Aah! Back to the gig economy, how lovely!
Me: Yes, indeed! But I must say, it has evolved a lot.
Anuraag: Yes, it has and for all good reasons. It's a shift from traditional employment.
Me: Indeed, why would anyone complain if it's resolving talent issues in various industries? We help clients find the right talent, anytime, anywhere.
Anuraag: Right! But you know what? There's still a lot of hesitation. It requires a mindset change, especially in educating leaders.
Me: I see that too, Anuraag! However, I felt the pandemic has opened up companies to more flexible work arrangements. Do you agree?
Anuraag: True, but leaders worry more about integrating gig workers, ensuring quality, and managing intellectual property challenges.
Me: Hmm. Yes, I've heard that quite a lot. But I feel the benefits far outweigh the concerns. The gig model offers diverse, skilled professionals preferring flexibility.
Anuraag: Yes, but finding the right balance between permanent and gig workers is crucial.
Me: You are right. The gig economy needs strategic integration into talent strategies.
Our 2-hour discussion ended as Anuraag headed to meet another friend.
The gig economy in professional services is not just a trend; it's a strategic answer to the evolving talent landscape. Offering flexibility and diversity is a viable solution to talent management challenges.
Join me at the #TASCON23 Conclave, where I'll explore the gig economy's role in the future of work. Let's continue this dialogue and foster a more adaptable, inclusive work environment.
