Helping members of your team feel confident and empowered is absolutely the key to creating a cohesive team that's actually moving in the same direction. Most of the teams I work with show up feeling dysfunctional. They complain that they're not all on the same page, all rowing in different directions. When we get down to the core of what's up - very often the individual members of the team don't feel their leader lacks confidence in them and they, therefore, haven't been empowered as a leader in their own right. Where THIS comes from is a lack of confidence from the leader themselves. Look, very few of us moved into leadership with anyone showing us how to be a good leader. Even taking leadership development courses doesn't fully prepare us to make our way as a leader. We often see how others are doing it and try to copy them. But that doesn't work - at least not for very long. How have you become confident as a leader? Who did you learn from? How did you find your way through to lead in a way that feels natural for YOU, not someone else? For me... I had to dive deep and actually understand who I am and stay true to that. My skills and talents as a leader are different from yours or anyone else's. And that's a good thing! Let's not all try to be the same type of leader. Let's find the confidence to be ourselves in our own style of leadership.

A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification. Humility is associated with good listening, but according to this also with self-confidence. Our concept of a learning community/social enterprise means keeping humility, and radical hospitality sharp and present.
