"With 25 licenses, we had a saving of 140 hours of work in 3 months" 👈 Several large hospitals in Queensland are planning to implement the Dragon Medical One speech recognition system after a very successful pilot program at Mackay Hospital in 2021, which saw the turnaround time for GP and specialist letters reduced from 30 days to 1 day. During the pilot program participants dictated on average three times faster than their typing speed and released between one and 30 extra hours of clinical care per week. Chief digital director for medical services at Mackay HHS Pieter Nel said: "We did calculate over that three months we did use DMO across the hospital, we had a saving of 140 hours of work. In dollars, conservative wages, we did save about $87,000 in that three months between the 25 licenses.” The next phase involved rolling it out to the rest of the hospital, with the state health department coming up with some money to fund 400 licenses across the service, including rural facilities, as part of a patient flow initiative #burnout #medicalcare #doctors #hospitals #physicians #clinicians #medical #innovation #staffshortages

When I see this comedy skit by Dr. Will Flanary, I chuckle, because it is more accurate than non clinicians realize. EMRs are not designed with the clinician in mind who is using them. This is a lesson we all need to consider when designing medical solutions. If the end user (ie. the clinicians) can't find it intuitive and simple to use, then it becomes an additional burden to patient care, which is always our primary goal. https://lnkd.in/gUDQ6cqD

Would you eat at a restaurant where the workers were "invited" to honor health codes but didn't have to? What about a doctor's office where the doctors were "invited" to read the latest studies? How about a hospital where the surgeons were "invited" to disenfect their hands before doing an operation? Sound far-fetched? Then why do we "invite" technical people to use good coding practices? Or what if we "invited" every team to pick their own tools that needed to integrate across the organization? What should you expect to result from following an approach just uses invitation? Some things need to be invited. Others need to be demanded. Knowing which is which is important.
