Hardest part of the job for an Outside Sales Rep...... 😨 opening the car door! Over coffee with an SVP of Sales last week, that’s the line that he casually said as he chuckled to himself. It stuck with me. He’s right. I’m in SaaS sales where I got my start being able to hide behind a phone. Cold calls over the phone are difficult. Heart racing, clammy palms. Terrified that all of your colleagues around you in the bullpen are going to hear a colossal mistake and know what a dorkfish you actually are! We were taught to control what you can control by knowing what you can know when calling a prospect. Name, title, industry, products sold, similar pain points to other customers, etc. 🤢 Cold calls, in person - next level pressure! You don’t get near the at bats that you do with cold calls over the phone so you better make them count. Outside Sales Leaders, arm your team with valuable data that helps them know who to see and why. Help them increase the number of at bats they get by helping them be efficient in the field. #outsidesales #fieldsalesleadership

We all know a motivated sales team is crucial to success, but what drives that motivation? Three months ago, we switched up the SPIFF program for our sales team, transitioning from individual rewards to a team-centric approach. We established a monthly stretch goal and pledged that everyone’s SPIFF payout would double if the team reached this goal. This adjustment meant success would benefit not only individuals but also their colleagues. The result was remarkable: sales skyrocketed by 266%! I suspect there are multiple motivations at play. How would you interpret the dramatic increase in performance?

Taking a minute to think about one of my favorite sales movies Glengarry Glen Ross. During the best scene from the film Baldwin’s character goes on an epic rant, and he touches on the ABC’s of sales: Always Be Closing. While I love the film, I have to disagree here. As sales professionals we’re obsessed with closing the deal, which is entirely the wrong way to look at it. Sales isn’t about closing, it’s about opening. Opening the relationship is the hardest and most critical part. So I think we should flip the “always be closing” mindset on its head and think of it more as “always be opening”. Always be opening the next relationship, the next opportunity, the next renewal, the next referral. It’s more about pipeline creation than “closing the deal”. If you open things up the right way, and are obsessed with always building pipeline the deals will close themselves.
