What is actually going on with the video game industry right now? After 20+ years of incredible growth ($20bn 2001; $190bn 2021) - incl. two turbocharged pandemic years - it suddenly feels like playing on harder difficulty. I've been thinking about this and have tried to distil something vaguely sensible this month for the Taylor Wessing UK gaming newsletter, TW Play. Link - and shameless plug - to the full article below. TL;DR for the LinkedIn crowd on what the heck happened and what's up for 2024:- 📈💰 Slower, more sustainable growth and deal activity ➡ Growth returned this year (+2.6%) after small dip in 2022. Growing macro pressure (high inflation; rising interest) and mobile still dealing with ATT/IDFA have cooled the sector. However, future projections remain strong with NewZoo forecasting revenues of $288bn by 2028, +8.8%pa. ➡ M&A and venture deal flow has been way down report InvestGame. Strategic buyers are risk-off given the macro position. But vast cash piles and strategic competition (especially between Big Tech) are seeing deals slowly return as the macro improves. Early stage venture is holding-up at pre-pandemic levels. AI in gaming is a hot investment area. 🛡⚔ Regulatory interventions increasing as gaming becomes ever more valuable and Big Tech dominated ➡ Microsoft finally closed its Activision deal after a two-year anti-trust battle and significant concessions. Epic, Apple and Google are fighting private anti-trust lawsuits and Sony, Apple and Google have faced regulatory investigations in the UK – all of this related to digital stores and alleged abuse of dominance. The Unity runtime controversy saw howls of anti-competitive behaviour. ➡ Significant new legislation inbound for the UK and EU. The Online Safety Act and Digital Services Act are set to impose material new burdens on technology and gaming companies. ➡ This regulatory muscle-flexing will not ease soon. Time for gamers to git gud. 🤖🧠 Artificial Intelligence: Game-changer or IP infringer? ➡ Generative AI tools are set to revolutionise game development. There are concerns around copyright infringement and mass job losses. Such concerns were also at the heart of the Hollywood strikes this year, as my learned colleague Simon Pulman has extensively covered. ➡ International laws are rushing to catch-up but an uncertain picture will remain for now. However, the value proposition of AI is simply too good for the increasingly expensive and high-risk business of game development to pass-up. ☁🎮 Cloud and subscriptions will drive innovation ➡ Still small but growing very fast – some predict cloud gaming growing from $4bn to $80bn+ by 2028. ➡ TBD whether streaming and subscriptions will impact gaming like they did music, film and TV. However, huge bets are being placed by Big Tech (Microsoft, Sony, Netflix, Nvidia and Samsung) in the scramble for our ever-distracted eyeballs. #Gaming #VideoGames #GamesIndustry
