Why do archives need a toolkit for Archiving Women’s Amateur Film? Because women amateurs' work is routinely hidden, not least by how we talk about women’s work- even before films reach an archive. Today I tracked down a Bealing film outside of the WFSA collection; attributed to Frank Bealing. Much of the collection held by WFSA bears this sole attribution. This edit (https://shorturl.at/koEGK) alternates between colour footage shot by Frank and b/w footage shot by Nancy. In this sequence we see both Frank with his camera, and Nancy with hers. This film wasn’t all Frank’s work. He is on screen, she is on screen, their cameras in their hands. We need to use a multifaceted approach: just the approach called for by the Women in Focus project. Helping parents age 35+ capture lovely memories & leave a legacy for your children with an easy to use Life Story Book template. In My Own Words Book - £14 Just Write - 1:1 Session - £100 Your Life Story Movie - £5000
Look at those cars in the background! My guess is that this is the Mouse-trap roller-coaster, Blackpool - picture taken in the early 50’s. There’s a story here - - The girl in the front seat laughing, the boy sat next to her looking slightly demonic! - The girls in the outside seats in the back row look ever so slightly terrified. - The girl in the middle feeling safer because she’s wedged in. Looking pensive, a bit of a Mona Lisa smile forming. Who took the photo? What year was it? Who are those children, sitting with my Mum (can you guess which one she is?) Picture found in my attic with a load of old reeled cine film. 🎥 I’ve still got my Grandad’s box brownie camera, his projector and screen. 📺 They’re treasured memories captured of family no longer here. A new film ‘All of us strangers’ is about the imagined conversations with loved ones no longer here. I’ve yet to see it but I’m sure it’ll make us think about our own circumstances and our own family. Whilst there’s many questions I’d like answers to, it’s a real comfort to have at least a few memories captured in photos and film. It’s so important to ask the questions before it’s too late, don’t you think? Whilst it’s not something we think about in our day to day lives, it’s a wonderful thing to record our own family histories. #InMyOwnWords #RecordingYourFamilyLifeStories #TheAuthorsJourney #AllOfUsStrangers

It's Friday, which means it's time to have some fun. The Bechdel Test is used to assess the portrayal of women in films. Alison Bechdel created it in 1985 in a comic strip. A film must meet the following criteria in order to pass the Bechdel Test: 1. At least two named women in it 2. Who talk to each other 3. About something other than a man While it is a simple test, simplicity is also it’s kryptonite. It is necessary to consider the character's complexity, what roles they perform, and how they are portrayed. According to studies, only 22% of films pass the test. One surprising film that passes the test is "Alien," in which two women discuss the alien, who is not a man. Some famous films that fail the Bechdel test include: • Avengers • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy • Fight Club • Girl With the Dragon Tattoo What is your favourite movie and does it pass the Bechdel Test? #mediaentertainment #fridayfun #movies #media #marketing #digitalmarketing #contentarketing

In 2023, Chinese movie theater attendance was back to almost 2019 levels. But what is unusual is that this year all top ten grossing films were domestic films. While the new Fast and Furious and Mission Impossible films were popular (Oppenheimer and Barbie also got attention in online reviews), they didn’t match up to performance of domestic films, as reported in Sixth Tone. https://lnkd.in/e539t3Hh At the same time, domestic Chinese films have advanced in both technical and artistic quality. Top films included big budget special effects films like Wandering Earth 2, but others addressed current social issues around gender and economic inequality. https://buff.ly/3Saa8aG This is a departure from historical genre films and tv series that have dominated in past. The film sets I photographed for 'Once Upon a Time in Shanghai' reflect popular historical touch points. With more diverse stories addressing contemporary issues, and filmed in real world locations, those mammoth historical set pieces may lose some of their relevance. But that’s probably good for viewers in the long run.
