It’s not too soon to think about your writing goals for 2024. ✍🏻 In 2022, I saw the power of having a big hairy audacious goal, which was to  have a publishing contract in hand for THE ONLY WAY THROUGH IS OUT, my coming-out later-in-life memoir, by the end of the year. As I thought about what it would take to achieve that goal, I considered what was within my control and what wasn’t. Within my control:  I could block out time to: 👉🏻 Revise my manuscript 👉🏻 Draft a proposal & query letter 👉🏻 Research agents, smaller traditional presses, and hybrid presses 👉🏻 Personalize my queries and pitch them I could hire a book coach to help me with the above & set a timetable for pitching and a timeline for deciding whether to move from pitching agents and smaller presses to hybrid presses. Outside my control: When–or whether–agents or smaller presses would respond to my queries, let alone say yes. 🤷🏻♀️ Real talk: It is SOOOO easy to let the things that are out of your control in your publishing journey derail you. Like silence or form rejections from agents.  ➡️ So I made a plan: I decided that if I hadn’t gotten any traction with agents or smaller presses by early June, I would pivot and begin pitching hybrid presses. The University of Wisconsin Press responded positively to my query in March 2022 and seven months later, on National Coming Out Day (!), I signed a contract with them to publish THE ONLY WAY THROUGH IS OUT. A big hairy audacious goal I am proud to have accomplished! 🎉 My big writing goal for 2024? Launch and market the hell out of my book. I’m going to do everything I can to get my story into the hands of any reader—LGBTQ+ or straight—who needs to believe that choosing authenticity is worth the cost.  And once that’s accomplished, I’ll start my next book. There’s another story brewing inside me, another story that needs to be told. A thought-provoking topic and headline, Robert. As you say, there are a range of routes into the events industry, with gaining a degree (or postgrad degree) the preferred route for some, while others may choose apprenticeships or apply directly. Many have taken the university route for over 20+ years now, with successful graduates supporting the industry, from new entrants to those at senior levels in the industry. From an education perspective (at UK Centre for Events Management (UKCEM), Leeds Beckett University, but also with our members of AEME (Association for Events Management Education), it isn't either/or - education or experience – as our degrees incorporate experience and industry engagement, within higher education, learning from (and contributing to) best practice and research. Students attracted to events management from school (rather than the range of other subjects and careers available) have demonstrated a commitment to the events industry. Developing them into well-educated, well-qualified, and experienced graduates, who can contribute to a highly skilled workforce, is one area that events education and industry are collaborating on, to increase the opportunities for them and the industry to succeed.

This Viewpoint Q&A interviews Dr Kim Feddema, an early career researcher and lecturer in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University in Boorloo/Perth. In her opinion, one of the biggest challenges faced by social marketers today is the rate and scope of information that individuals receive. LinkedIn asked us how we support diversity. Over our 15 years, approximately 50% or more of our readers AND writers have come from minority communities. In the journalism industry, which overall has had a major problem with attracting any diversity (among staff and readership), we're something special and give hope for the future of the field. Also, the fact that we hit what are essentially news deserts -- urban community colleges that don't have newspapers plus our news box program on the streets of New York, which also has locations where there are no other news boxes, attest to the fact that we have really work to attract ALL readers. We'd also made some progress on a Latino edition before the pandemic, and maybe that will actually make it to print this coming academic year. We hold various readership contests, and we see contestants are at least half of the time from diverse communities, helping reinforce our belief that we are truly engaging all types of readers. So, anyway, that's the answer to the question.
