You know, I have a suspicion that gaming as an industry is not going to get better until GaaS dies. It's too much of a magnet for investors who want to make the next Fortnite. Therefore, they only see their audience as GaaS players and won't take a risk on something else, like a BG3 or a Hi-Fi Rush. I hope I'm wrong, but I can see this as a long fatal love chase (h/t Louisa May Alcott) that's going to keep stifling gaming innovation and creation for the near future. --- On edit May 11: I didn't expect this to blow up. I wrote this feeling surly about Tango and the other studios being slammed shut this week. The arguments raised in the comments got me thinking, and I want to explore this further. Assuming GaaS is sticking around, how do we make it something positive for studios and for players? How do we make sure other non-GaaS games get funded and player attention? How do we stop GaaS from becoming a predatory, addictive money grab? In short, how do we do it right?
