There is more than one way to delineate “Western Massachusetts” from the rest of the Commonwealth. Hydrologists (& hydrogeologists) may focus on watersheds and the interconnection of natural resource areas. So, if it's a hot summer day and you prefer to cool off in one of the following watersheds, you may be interested in joining MassDEP at the Western Massachusetts Brownfields Roundtable on September 7, 2023. Thanks to the #inflationreductionact, the Bureau of Land Management has funding to implement meaningful and effective #habitatrestoration projects on #publicland. Our diligent Phase I/NEPA Manager Jessica Rury, AICP will be speaking at the Metro New Orleans Section, American Planning Association - Louisiana Chapter State Conference: The Art of Neighboring that is taking place from October 11th - October 13th in Alexandria. Jessica will be doing session 5 with Jasmine Thomas, AICP on Environmental Due Diligence, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), being used as a critical tool in the planning process, as understanding when and how to leverage these assessments can significantly impact community planning, particularly in Brownfield Projects. Three of the main learning objectives are: - Understand the opportune moments when a Phase I ESA proves beneficial. - Gain insights into interpreting a Phase I ESA effectively. - Identify strategies to seamlessly integrate environmental due diligence into your planning project(s). (Someone has deep pockets ;)) ...docs suggest replacing an environmental assessment for the North Coast transmission line — from Prince George to Terrace — with a speedier “alternative streamlined process.” The vaguely defined process could involve setting conditions to mitigate environmental impacts, but it is not clear what those would be or if the process would be transparent.An environmental assessment is an independent, rigorous and transparent process that would detail the line’s impacts and propose mitigations where possible. According to a BC Hydro presentation, the transmission line would affect as many as 101 private properties, including agricultural land. It would cut through traplines and woodlots, fall within 200 metres of archeological sites, overlap with designated ungulate winter habitat for moose and cross waterways that include habitat for at-risk white sturgeon. https://lnkd.in/ghAydakX

Here at WGM, our ultimate goal is to strengthen communities for a resilient future through insightful design. That's why we've spent the better part of a year collaborating with Broadwater County and the Community Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) to draft an amendment to the county's Growth Policy. What is a growth policy? It's an official guide based on common vision for managing change in communities. As Broadwater County grows, it aims to develop a Growth Policy that aligns with its vision of preserving its unique rural character and agricultural lands while embracing the potential benefits of growth. This amendment focuses on inclusion of a future land use map. With the draft future land use plan/map, the community is charting a course that honors their values and sets the stage for a prosperous future. As the policy moves toward the adoption process, Broadwater County residents, local and state agencies, and other stakeholders are providing final comments for consideration. We're excited to see how this plan strengthens Broadwater County for a resilient future.

Next Chapters on the Colorado River:   Short-Term Coping, Post-2026 Operations, and Beyond   For many years, full reservoirs on the Colorado River made for relative peace and stability among the basin’s major water users, despite lingering concerns over environmental degradation, unfulfilled promises to Tribal Nations, and the eventual consequences of water over-allocation and overuse. That era has abruptly ended, challenging the authors of modern Colorado River policy to quickly draft new chapters stabilizing the system through 2026, directing post-2026 reservoir operations, and articulating the long-term vision and strategies for achieving a healthy, sustainable and equitable river system. It is a formidable, multi-faceted agenda being addressed in many ways.
