How is it possible that one Distinguished Engineer (IC9) at Meta can be worth $2,500,000 per year? That is 6x the amount a Senior Eng (IC5) gets paid 🤯 The answer is simple: leverage amplifies their efforts. There are three main ways IC9s have leverage: 1. Write Software No One Else Can - Software itself is high leverage. You can write code once, then copy it across a fleet of machines for no additional cost. At large companies, even changes from a single engineer can have incredible leveraged impact due to scale. These engineers make impactful changes that no one else can. 2. Influencing Large Groups of Engineers - Writing software isn't always the best way to have impact. If you can influence others to write code, you can get a lot more done. Writing code is high leverage, communication is often higher leverage (see attached diagram). 3. Making Large Groups More Efficient - The most impactful engineers' work have compounding effects since they make improvements to tooling or underlying infrastructure that many engineers use. Imagine making 1000 engineers 3% faster. That's like creating 30 more engineers of dev velocity out of thin air. We all have the same amount of time available every week. The best way to have more impact is not to invest more time but to think about how to get more out of it. Even though IC9 is unattainable for most, we can all learn from how they operate to have more impact. If you don't believe me on the IC9 salary, check (levels.fyi). These amounts are ridiculous but seem plausible given the IC7/8 data points show a similar trajectory.

This is a timely post given the discussions of how considering individual performance and impact damages teams and so on. Clearly some high performance companies still haven’t gotten the memo. #softwaredevelopment #productivity

Re: #3, this is my preferred impact. When I would identify and advocate for these types of projects, my former manager would call it a "force multiplier". Earlier in my career I thought this type of thinking and impact was only appropriate for "platform" engineers, but I've found that product engineers have unique perspective and skill to deliver on these projects. No matter how busy things get with delivering features, the best teams find a way to prioritize projects to accelerate productivity across the team and organization.
