Every February, the nation recognizes Black History Month to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions and achievements of the Black and African American community. Celebrating American diversity creates a sense of compassion which helps connect people. Diversity across the organization, including in leadership roles, is fundamental at BARDA and emphasized through the workforce initiatives laid out in our Strategic Plan. We continue to grow relationships with faculty and graduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions, women’s colleges, and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) so that highly qualified graduates and post-doctoral scholars from these institutions are aware of career opportunities at BARDA. Public health emergencies often have disproportionate impacts on underserved and at-risk populations. We invite private sector and academic scientists with diverse perspectives to join us in pursuing accessible MCMs across the entire population and in a range of settings. For #blackhistorymonth, Amex’s Black Employee Network (BEN) hosted a panel to discuss authentic and courageous leadership, both within the Black community and at Amex, featuring Marques Zak, Curtis Wilson, Sarah Dodds-Brown, Adarian Sneed, and Brittany Powell. Brittany has been on my team leading one of our Cobrand Partnerships for the past 2 years. I was inspired by the conversation and wanted to share 3 insights from Brittany that really resonated with me: 1. Drive change and be courageous to follow through: Advocacy doesn’t mean having the loudest voice in the room. We all can be a champion for change through daily actions, big and small. 2. Create comfortable spaces: It’s all of our responsibility to foster environments where everyone can be seen and heard. For Brittany, what’s given her comfort is knowing that her leadership has created a safe space for her to show up as her most authentic self. 3. Black History happens every day: Brittany reminded us that Black history is happening all around us and it’s important to celebrate those moments beyond February. Some ways she puts this into action is by following emerging Black talent, keeping up with changemakers across industries, and supporting Black-owned businesses.    I really loved Brittany’s comments. They were so simple, effective, and easy to put into practice. Having Employee Networks like BEN reinforces confidence and reminds colleagues they have peers of similar backgrounds in the workplace, and I am committed to continuing to support and elevate the voices of our Black colleagues within PML and across the Blue Box.

This Black History Month, bckers honors the resilience, achievements, and contributions of the Black community. A crucial aspect of this celebration is recognizing the pivotal role that businesses play in driving our communities forward. From small enterprises to large corporations, Black-owned businesses have been instrumental in shaping local economies and fostering growth. These businesses not only provide goods and services but also create job opportunities, mentorship programs, and a sense of pride within their communities. As we celebrate the rich tapestry of Black history, let's shine a spotlight on the entrepreneurs and visionaries who have paved the way. Their dedication, innovation, and commitment to excellence have not only fueled economic progress but have also become a source of inspiration for future generations. This Black History Month, let's acknowledge the power of businesses to uplift communities, promote diversity, and drive positive change. By supporting and amplifying Black-owned enterprises, we contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant future for all.

Today is the beginning of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the rich culture and incredible contributions of Black people throughout history. It is also a time to act on addressing longstanding inequities in healthcare access that disproportionately affect Black people and people of color. At San Ysidro Health, we understand that our health is influenced by many factors, such as where we live, what we eat, how we exercise, what we breathe, and how we are treated. These factors are known as social determinants of health and they are often unequal by race. That is why we are dedicated to creating a culture that values diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and to providing compassionate care for all. We are also committed to developing a workforce that represents the society we serve and the patients we care for. But we also recognize that celebrating Black History Month is not enough. To truly respect and honor black existence, we need to educate ourselves and others about the history, culture, and achievements of black people, not just for a month, but for every day of the year. We need to learn from the past, understand the present, and work towards a better future. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re celebrating exceptional Black leaders working to build a more equitable New York City. In our Black History Month Spotlight, we ask these leaders: “How does Black history and your own lived experience inform your work at your organization?” We begin our series by posing this question to our own Melissa A. Browne, Chief Development Officer at United Way of New York City. “Learning about Black history is one of my earliest memories,” Melissa says. “I was filled with stories centered on the incredible power and ingenuity of my people. My family, full of educators, were my inspiration, including an uncle who was a Black Panther, another who was a trailblazer as an openly gay Black man in the 60s, and my mother — a scientist who may literally know everything. Now, as a mother of a young Black son, the importance of fortifying the magic of Black history is even more important, especially in these fraught political times. One of the key reasons I joined United Way of New York City was its dedication to building and amplifying inclusive and diverse communities, which is reflected in the staff at UWNYC and how we break down barriers to success in Black neighborhoods. Too often nonprofits see their role as imparting knowledge or services. At UWNYC we know we can’t address these barriers without respecting and amplifying the voices in these communities.” #BlackLeaders #BlackLeadership
