It's Sunday morning, let's all have our cup of coffee and think about the future of intent data. Intent data often makes us skeptics in sales, and I've heard the same from fellow revenue leaders. Many are unsure about its practicality for sales, especially with categorical intent. My take is that categorical intent can be a letdown, while behavioral intent, like Bombora, shows potential but demands time and investment. In summary: 🔵 Let's say goodbye to categorical intent. 🔵 Customize behavioral intent for your industry. 🔵 Focus on individual buyer behavior for personalized outreach. 🔵 Measure intent based on the buyer journeys in your CRM. INTENT DATA - you probably want to roll your eyes at the thought of it 😂🙄 I’m not the only skeptic….😉 I meet with revenue leaders daily who say the same. Bombora. 6sense. Demandbase. Zoominfo. Leadsift. Etc… Intent is often this black box we really want to work…but struggle to make actionable to sellers. Helpful for abm and ad retargeting - but relatively useless to salespeople. My take: Chategorical intent is a scam and an absolute waste of money. Due to its limited taxonomy, it creates a 1-size fits all delivery that’s hardly accurate to the buyers doing the research. Behavioral intent like 6sense is far more useful…but I see it being a self-fulfilling prophecy. You pay a ish ton of money to run ads for 6 months and from those ads, you're is able to determine who’s viewing, clicking, and making behavior changes based on what they’re seeing. So of course the intent is more accurate. But the challenge I see is that it takes 6 months for the AI to learn what’s working and what’s not in order to deliver any kind of ROI. Tell me if you think I’m way off base or if y’all have had a different experience, but that’s how I see the predictive analysis playing out. It’s a good longterm play but still leaves a gap by not identifying individual buyer behavior. Here’s how I see the future of intent across the gtm landscape - ---> We do away with categorical intent for good. ---> Behavioral intent isn’t just used for marketing. It becomes customizable to every teams gtm strategy. Meaning, you begin tracking the signals that your company specifically cares about and it not being the same across legal, insurance, finance, and SaaS. ---> Behavioral intent gets to the individual buyer level…making it actionable to sellers for personal and relevant outreach. ---> Predictive performance of intent isn’t measured after 6 months of paid ads. It’s measuring the buyer journeys of all your closed won accounts in your crm. This is how I see intent being helpful to sales people and how I see intent changing how companies opporate in the future. I totally understand the skeptic. Its so easy to get burned. But having seen intent actioned well, my skepticm has turned into a believer and champion for what’s to come. What do you think?

Good feedback in here on intent data from Chris Herring While his term "categorical intent" is a little confusing to me ... (I think he means the broad categories typically used by 3rd party intent providers) and he's right that, from a good source, you don't have to do more stuff and wait to get something useful. His POV on person-level data is particularly insightful. "it isn't just for marketing" ... As I am constantly saying, real purchase intent uses the behavior of known individuals to illuminate buyer's journeys taking shape. It's then what GTM teams do differently (in response to this better insight) that drives incremental value capture. The intent data revolution is a subset of the data-driven GTM transformation that folks like Forrester's Terry Flaherty and Seth Marrs have been working on for more than 5 years now. As my data show, when there is a good supply of quality data for your category, as Brett Kahnke has written "If Your B2B Organization Is Not Investing In Intent Data, You Are Falling Behind".
