As we commemorate Juneteenth, I am reminded of our ongoing efforts to foster diversity and inclusion in healthcare. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and symbolizes freedom and equality. Recently, Davin Healthcare hosted a discussion panel on increasing minority representation in healthcare. The event highlighted the vital contributions of minority professionals and addressed systemic barriers. Juneteenth reminds us of the progress made and the work ahead. Our discussion underscored the significance of creating an inclusive environment where every individual, regardless of their background, can thrive and contribute to the betterment of healthcare. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system. #Juneteenth #DiversityandInclusion #HealthcareEquality #DavinHealthcare

There is concerning evidence that people from under-represented groups are losing trust in healthcare systems and providers, and this is affecting their health outcomes. To combat this, Sanofi launched its A Million Conversations initiative in 2023 to empower people from under-represented communities to engage in a direct dialogue with health system leaders, including the healthcare industry, and to grow a pipeline of diverse healthcare leaders. The Health Policy Partnership is proud to have convened the initiative’s Advisory Group while also lending secretariat support. The Advisory Group comprises ten inspirational leaders from around the world – people working in healthcare, academia, advocacy, and research – who are committed to helping make healthcare more accessible and equitable for all. Recent research has shown that people from under-represented groups have had their trust in healthcare eroded. In many countries, women, people from ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community report higher levels of negative experiences. It is our hope that our contribution to A Million Conversations, alongside the expertise of its Advisory Group, can shift the needle to ensure trust is restored in healthcare to improve people's experiences and outcomes globally. The WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All has found that at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitution. Yet countries are not passing and putting into practice laws to ensure their populations are entitled to access health services. This underpins the fact that at least 4.5 billion people — more than half of the world’s population — were not fully covered by essential health services in 2021. To address these types of challenges, the theme for #WorldHealthDay 2024 is 'My health, my right’. This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

We are very much enjoying meeting with our local MPs and receiving their critical support for WHWBSW’s 2024 State Budget bid. ‘Small Change Big Impact,’ the Women’s Health Services Network’s recently released report, captures the very significant collective impact the women’s health sector continues to have in advancing gender equality and women’s health in Victoria. The report o Describes the unique role of the #womenshealth sector in Victoria’s health system over the past four decades. o Illustrates the role #healthpromotion and #PrimaryPrevention play in reducing demand on clinical and response services and keeping Victorians healthier and safer. o Showcases how the sector’s work drives a more equitable Victorian health system. o Draws on case studies and testimonials that show best practice evidence-based partnerships and projects that deliver effective and economically efficient activities. o Demonstrates the significant value investing in the sector’s people, plans and systems brings to the health and wellbeing of Victorians. Is Health a Cost, an Investment, or a Human Right? Health as a #humanright offers a powerful counter-narrative that centers on democratic pluralism and political equality. This perspective challenges the predominant views of health merely as a cost or investment, emphasizing instead its fundamental role in ensuring #dignity and #equity for all. ➡ Health as a Human Right Health is not just a biological condition; it's deeply embedded in social and power relations, shaped by institutional arrangements. Advancing #healthrights in our current context requires putting human rights in the service of building democratic political economies that strengthen transformative political possibilities. ➡ Understanding Health Rights Advancing health rights involves recognizing that health and illness patterns result from social and power dynamics as much as biology or individual behaviour. This understanding shifts the focus from treating health disparities as unfortunate occurrences to addressing them as rights violations and injustices that demand redress. ➡ Legal and Policy Changes Promoting #healthrights also necessitates changes in international and national law. These changes include making affirmative entitlements to health care judicially enforceable and integrating human rights frameworks into public policymaking. This approach involves multi-sectoral planning and budgeting, focusing on social determinants of health and prioritizing marginalized groups from the outset. Framing health as a #humanright means creating a world where everyone's health is valued and protected, not just for economic benefits but for the inherent dignity it provides to every individual.
