HealthCorps mentor Marc Byles led a fantastic activity that linked mental health to the food we eat at the popular 24th Annual ASTEC Art and Chocolate Festival earlier this month. Parents, students, and educators even had the chance to make their own chocolate energy bites. We're proud to bring these healthy tips and tasty treats to Oklahoma City students and families! A big thank you to Continental Resources for supporting our work in the region and supporting our Oklahoma communities.

At Youth Empowerment, we understand the profound impact of trauma on individuals and communities. That's why we've embraced restorative circles as a powerful tool for resolving conflicts and working through trauma in our community. Through these circles, we create a safe and supportive space where individuals can come together to share their experiences, express their emotions, and seek understanding. In these circles, everyone has a voice and is encouraged to actively listen and empathize with others. By fostering open and honest communication, we promote healing and reconciliation, empowering individuals to confront their challenges and move forward with resilience. Our restorative circles not only address immediate conflicts but also cultivate a culture of empathy, compassion, and mutual respect within our community. Through our commitment to restorative practices, we're not just addressing the symptoms of trauma; we're addressing the root causes and creating lasting change. Together, we're building a stronger, more connected community where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Even if 'the worst' didn't happen, scars can run deep. For people who experienced deep disruption during childhood, those scars can define a lifetime of anxiety and isolation. On October 30th, I'm having a live conversation with Sorrel Pindar. I'd love you to come along. Here's what Sorrel writes: 'What’s the worst that can happen? Boarding school is often seen as a privilege, the portal to success in adult life. Success, wealth and power. But what of those for whom boarding school was time spent in purgatory waiting for the day we could wave goodbye to the school gates? Those of us who never wanted to go to a school reunion because it would be too painful. The worst that can happen is bullying and sexual abuse, but more unseen are the psychic wounds of feelings of loss and abandonment and the sense that you must have been bad to get ‘sent away.’ But like other forms of childhood trauma, it is possible to heal those wounds in adulthood. We exist in a world of connection, where we heal best in connection. In this one-hour webinar, I will be talking with John Britton. We are both ‘boarding school survivors’ and we have learned to heal and thrive. John’s work on self-with-others and my work on how we heal trauma in relationship come together to create a potent mix! What we have to offer is not only relevant to those who went to boarding school but to anyone who suffered the wounds of loss and abandonment in childhood. https://lnkd.in/ex5hKz_5 ' #boardingschool #childhood #recovery #coach #selfwithothers

BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES Recovery from trauma is about reconciling pre-existing worldviews with the traumatic experience. It's about making meaning. Individual resilience involves our hope. It's about cognitive flexibility, active coping skills, physical health, social support, your moral compass, and purpose. We can help others build resilience by checking in with them. Community resilience involves our safety nets. It's about greater perceptions of control and support from organizations. When we face fear and discomfort by speaking our truth, we build strength. We re-discover what's important and find our power through our different narratives.
