Maternal Alzheimer’s: A Risk Factor for Brain Changes A new study finds that inheriting Alzheimer's risk from your mother, regardless of her age at onset, is linked to increased amyloid levels in the brain. This protein is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The findings suggest maternal history of memory impairment, even without a formal diagnosis, could be a crucial factor in identifying individuals at risk of Alzheimer's. https://lnkd.in/dDwb6KZp Our research on the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's Disease is now accessible online in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions (TRCI)! While the hippocampus and cortex are preserved, we observed that amygdala atrophy signifies the progression of the elderly to mild cognitive impairment. These changes are nucleus-specific, involving the basolateral and amygdaloid complexes, and are also linked to a decline in cognitive function. We thereby emphasize the importance of incorporating amygdala subfield atrophy analysis and conducting clinical follow-ups to identify individuals experiencing subclinical cognitive decline, especially among those initially classified as 'cognitively healthy' during the first clinical evaluation. 🧠 In 2023, approximately 6.7 million Americans are navigating life with diagnosed Alzheimer’s, but it is estimated that fewer than half the people living with dementia have a diagnosis.   As we are approaching the close of September which is #WorldAlzheimersMonth, we'd like to spotlight organizations and individuals who are leading the way in Alzheimer’s research for detection and treatment.   Cognoptix are developing a low-cost and non-invasive eye scan which detects amyloid, the earliest biomarker of Alzheimer's.   C2N Diagnostics's lead commercial product, PrecivityAD, is a mass-spectometry test that supports physicians with clinical diagnosis (which has historically been based on 'story-telling'). SomaLogic's platform recently featured in research by National Institute on Aging (NIA) and John Hopkins University, successfully identifying AD biomarkers that had previously gone undetected. The biomarkers have the potential to indicate dementia as early as 20-30 years prior to symptom development. In a recent study involving data from over 1,000 patients globally, researchers have uncovered new insights into a condition called posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), which often serves as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. The study revealed that 94% of PCA cases are linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s, while the remaining 6% are associated with other conditions like Lewy body disease. Unlike typical Alzheimer’s patients, individuals with PCA initially exhibit normal cognition but struggle with visuospatial tasks, experiencing difficulty in judging distances and performing certain tasks. This study highlights the importance of improved diagnostic tools and early treatment options, including potential therapies targeting amyloid and tau proteins. This large-scale study, led by University of California, San Francisco and including data from 36 sites in 16 countries, emphasizes the significance of identifying PCA early on, as it overwhelmingly predicts the development of Alzheimer’s. Patients with PCA typically demonstrate normal cognition initially but struggle with visuospatial challenges, which can later progress to mild or moderate dementia.
