You’re a business leader and you need growth, but you don’t have time to stop and press the reset button. A few years back, I worked with a luxury goods client that had this challenge. They had a solid base, but that base wasn’t buying at the same rate anymore. They needed to attract a new audience without alienating their loyal customers. We used the three-horizon planning approach to create growth from new markets whilst protecting the existing revenue streams.... In the pursuit of sustained growth while preserving existing operations, Three Horizon Planning (3H) is an indispensable strategic tool. I use it a lot. This framework, conceived by McKinsey & Company, strategically segments planning into three distinct horizons: 1. Horizon 1 (H1): This initial horizon centres on the short-term, prioritising the optimisation of current operations while minimising associated risks. 2. Horizon 2 (H2): The second horizon extends the planning timeline to the mid-term, focusing on identifying different avenues for growth and fostering innovation. 3. Horizon 3 (H3): The third horizon unfolds as a long-term perspective, concentrating on groundbreaking innovation and exploring entirely new markets. The Significance of 3H Planning: 📈 Holistic Strategy: By harmonizing immediate needs with a far-reaching vision, 3H Planning facilitates alignment within organisations. 📈 Risk Mitigation: A core benefit lies in the ability to allocate resources to future horizons, thereby reducing vulnerability to market disruptions. 📈 Innovation and Growth: Horizons 2 and 3 foster a culture of innovation and diversification, bolstering an organization's competitive edge. Key Tips for Effective 3H Planning: ✅ Clear Communication: Achieving comprehension of the framework among all stakeholders is pivotal for alignment. ✅ Resource Allocation: Resource allocation must be based on the unique requirements and timelines of each horizon, which could entail reallocating budgets to nurture innovation in H2 or streamline operations in H1. ✅ Innovation Culture: Encouraging creative thinking and experimentation within the team nurtures an environment that drives innovation. ✅ Regular Review: 3H Planning is not a one-off endeavour; it needs ongoing adjustments to strategic priorities to remain in sync with evolving market dynamics. ✅ Embrace Agility: Remaining poised to pivot and react swiftly to emerging market trends is a critical asset in a constantly shifting business landscape. In essence, 3H Planning empowers business leaders to cultivate growth strategies that are dynamic, visionary, and well-prepared for future challenges. If you haven't used it yet, give it a whirl. #Leadership #Strategy #Planning
