Are Your Processes Built for Your Strategic Growth Goals? Achieving operational excellence is a central ambition for many organizations, yet reaching this pinnacle is not merely about setting goals—it's fundamentally about the meticulous design and diligent implementation of processes that clear the path toward these objectives. Consider operational goals as the destination on your organization's roadmap. Without a reliable vehicle—a seamlessly operating machine of efficient processes—those goals might as well be mirages on the horizon. A methodical approach is key to assessing the current health of your processes and then reengineering them to ensure every facet of your organization is not only aligned with but actively propelling your business towards its strategic goals. To ensure your processes are not just meeting but exceeding your strategic goals, consider these critical steps: ▶️ Assess Current Processes: Dive deep into your existing workflows to identify areas needing streamlining or enhancement. ▶️ Benchmark and Establish Metrics: Set clear, actionable metrics that align with your strategic vision to effectively measure progress. ▶️ Understanding Customer Requirements: Explore your customers' needs to guarantee your processes fulfill their expectations. ▶️ Voice of Business Feedback: Elicit feedback from all organizational levels to gauge the impact of current processes and unearth opportunities for improvement. ▶️Leadership's commitment: Fostering a culture where every employee actively engages in enhancing and growing the business is vital. If you think your processes are not adequately driving the growth goals set, it may be time to undertake a transformative redesign process. This endeavor goes beyond mere incremental changes; it's about comprehensively overhauling your operations to achieve significant improvements in a short timeframe. Here's the next in our ongoing series "Organizations that Work". If your business could benefit from increased reliability and velocity, have a look! And be sure to let us know what you think! And of course, "Like"!
Organization velocity and reliability are outcomes of organization design aligned to strategy. In last week’s blog on Organizations that Work, we discussed the case for strategic organization design and set the stage for its process while focusing on role authority and accountability. This week we will discuss how strategic organization design supports reliable performance and business velocity. Together, we’ll chart a course toward a more efficient, effective, and resilient organization – one that works for everyone. YOU SAID FOCUS ON SIMPLIFICATION TO GROW FASTER... BUT HOW? Complexity is the cumulative by-product of organizational changes, big and small, that over the years weave complications (often invisibly) into the ways that work is done. The causes tend to fall into one of four categories: structural mitosis, product proliferation, process evolution, and managerial habits. In this article from Ron Ashkenas, you will understand how successful/fast growing businesses put "Simplification" as a core Strategic Imperative to accelerate/improve Velocity. As often, it should come from the Top and also requires decisions to be made at various managerial levels. Getting an external view on how to increase Simplification is often needed as this requires internal meetings to be managed/coordinated on that topic. This may result in removing some specific tasks / reporting / activities that do not create / do not contribute to generating value (for example). At AXELERAISE CONSULTING, we are running such programs based on a proprietary methodology, resulting in higher motivated teams and increased productivity. Want to know more? The RAPID model is another framework used for decision-making and clarity of roles within organizations. Here's an analysis of the RAPID model: 1. **Recommend (R)**: This role involves proposing a course of action or decision. It's typically done by individuals or groups with expertise or relevant information. 2. **Agree (A)**: This role signifies those who must agree to the recommendation before it can proceed. They may have decision-making authority or veto power. 3. **Perform (P)**: This role involves carrying out the decision or action once it's been agreed upon. Performers are responsible for executing the plan effectively. 4. **Input (I)**: Individuals or groups in this role provide input or information to help inform the recommendation or decision-making process. Their expertise or perspective is valuable but not necessarily binding. 5. **Decide (D)**: The decision-maker(s) hold the authority to make the final decision. They may consider recommendations, inputs, and agreement from others but ultimately have the final say. Analyzing the RAPID model involves assessing its effectiveness in facilitating decision-making and clarity of roles within an organization. Key aspects to consider include: - **Decision-making speed**: Does the RAPID model help streamline decision-making processes and reduce delays? - **Clarity of roles**: Are the roles of Recommend, Agree, Perform, Input, and Decide clearly defined and understood by all stakeholders? - **Alignment**: Does the RAPID model ensure alignment between decision-makers, performers, and stakeholders, thus reducing potential conflicts? - **Accountability**: Does the model foster accountability by clearly defining who is responsible for making recommendations, agreeing, performing, providing input, and deciding? Overall, a well-implemented RAPID model can enhance decision-making efficiency, increase clarity of roles and responsibilities, and improve organizational alignment and accountability.
